Recently my Hauppauge PVR-1600 started to misbehave which resulted in many 0 kb or recordings cut short. I've upgraded the driver so hopefully it will go away for me, but the problem exists for many of us.
This scenario is frustrating because the tuner status is reporting that all is OK, the file is listed on the 'Ready' or 'What's New' lists and it is only when you want to watch you find out that there is nothing there!
The only way for me to check if the recording is really happenings is this:
1. Start playing it while it is being recorded. Hit Ctrl-B to show OSD. See if the number showing total length of the show is changing; or
2. Close PVRX2. Grab my keyboard. Open TV folder and see the size of the file. Refresh after a while to see if it is changing.
I don't know how to create a plugin which would show the REAL recording status, but maybe, by thinking out loud, can give sub (recordingservice.exe) or wakalaka (recording status plugin) or Mr. Slimm (Slimm GBPVR) some ideas and hope they will be simple to implement.
My first idea is this: show recorder and current file length on 'Pending' screen. Or file size instead. This info could be left over when file is moved to 'Whats new' screen for easy identification of offending recorder. See jpg example. Or example of the tuner status plugin modified to show current length and size of the file.
My second thought is that the recording service could periodically check the length of the recorded file, and if it is not changing, issue a warning and/or try to switch to another tuner if available.
What do you think?
