Is GB-PVR always using a timeshift buffer

When I see Live TV, is gb-pvr using a timeshift buffer all the time, or only after I paused once?

The reason I'm asking is that the video stream is filtered a bit different when it goes directly from the capture card to display compared from file to display.

It is always recording to a timeshift file (buffer).
