Sub,

Based on most of the posts I’ve read where users are having issues, it seems like the culprit has been the codec, or the lack there of.

So, can you please suggest which codec to use for each of the options in the Config | playback tab? Whether they cost $0 or otherwise, which ones work, or is best suited, or which ones you use?

Thanks.

I think you will find that this is not possible to suggest specific codecs as people have different hardware which have different results on each system. I have 3 systems 2 of which have extreemly good performance with the intervideo codec in Windvd 7, but the thirds doesnt even play files with it. FFdshow is used well on that systems, but it has poor performance on the other the other systems, and so on,

I believe though one that Sub has suggested in the past is the mvp decoder here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/MPV_Decoder.htm

may work, and if you have wintv you can get the non-css version on the intervideo decoder

thanks.. i found ffdshow to work on everything except HD files on a client.

On the GBPPVR server, with just ffdshow installed, it plays everything HD fine - from live TV, recorded ClearQAM and home videos from my HD camcorder (.m2ts files). the client, (over wired network, with streaming) does not play any HD including live tv. it is this I need to fix.

This could have to do with the format of you recordings, i am not sure that .ts is supposted in streaming, but i could be wrong, i would search forums, i know my client doesnt do live TV in the filesharing mode (.ts) and i know its not supported in filesharing mode, but plays recordings just fine. i would look into what format you are using and see if that makes a difference

i'm going to be installing coreavc on both the server and client to see if this makes any improvment.

Thanks.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to that. It depends on your source video, videocard, videocard drivers, operating system, desktop resolution, CPU speed, video renderer etc.

Thanks for replying sub.. I think i've come to terms that there is no silver bullet here or elsewhere, including SageTV. SageTv would not even play the HD files on the server - probably requried more tweaking...

But tell me which codec you use to read the dvr-ms files that you've recorded.

Thanks.

I dont record .dvr-ms files here.

I record .ts files, from a mixture of DVB-C/DVB-S (both MPEG2 standard definition) and DVB-T (high definition H.264). I mainly use the Cyberlink decoders.

wait a second.. then why is my gb-pvr recording the HD files as .dvr-ms and not .ts? even the HD that is played in the livebuffer directory, is in the .dvr-ms container.

How can i change this to .ts or .mp4?

thanks.

The type of file that gets created depends on the Multiplexer setting on the Misc tab. The "TS Mux" option creates .ts files.
