What is the best DVD decoder/navigator out there (free or commercial)? Preferably one that uses ATI hardware decoding. I'm also looking for a navigator that can skip stuff.

The default navigator works fine. In order to skip things, you may need to use AnyDVD to get rid of UOPs (User Operation Prohibited).

As for the decoder, my preference is the "MPC-HC MPEG-2 Decoder (Gabest)" filename is "Mpeg2DecFilter.ax"). You can download the latest SVN builds from http://www.xvidvideo.ru/content/category/1/1/2/

You may need to go back a couple of builds to find the "Standalone Filters" which is what you need and they are not in all the SVN builds.

Thank you for the replies. I should have time to mess around with the HTPC this week and will try those.

.
Quick question, Do you currently use this codec for live TV and DVD playback. What audio codec do you use?
How many times you had a problem playing a DVD?

I'm currently only using it for DVD playback. For everything else, I use ArcSoft Video decoder from TMT3. For audio, I use FFDshow although I may switch back to AC3Filter.

I've never had any issues playing a DVD but I play mostly BluRays or TV.

The "MPC-HC MPEG-2 Decoder (Gabest)" decoder is working great for me as a DVD decoder. And it's free! Smile

It also worked for playback MPEG, but I found the ATI MPEG decoder does a better job at filtering out my noisy analog cable picture.

MPC-HC MPEG-2 Decoder have two problems - it have no DXVA and it is not able to output in NV12.

That mean it is not able to use hardware deinterlacing = bad picture quality for LiveTV (MPEG2)

Example here:

thats not how i understand it
hardware deinterlacing uses the the chip on the video card so less cpu usage
it doesnt mean that software deinterlacing wont do a good job just that your cpu will be used instead of the gpu

Hoborg is correct. The MPC MPEG-2 decoder does not support DXVA 1/2 (which is required for hardware acceleration). The "MPC-HC Video Decoder" does but it does not support MPEG-2. The MPEG-2 decoder works for DVD video because it is 480p (no deinterlacing required), but for 1080i sources, it is not a good choice. Which is why I use the ArcSoft or Cyberlink decoders for LiveTV. I find ArcSoft to use less CPU than the Cyberlink filters.

Edit: You can confirm this by running DXVA checker on a 1080i file.
