I am assuming there are still no internal cards that would allow for me to record HD signal from my dish receiver.

Are we (gbpvr) fully supporting the new Hauppauge HD DVR product yet?

I have seen some post about problems with it and GBPVR, and also some technical problems with it item itself, like overheating and other issues.

Is the HD DVR device the only way I can go?

It's the simplest Smile

The other areas you could look into (probably fruitlessly) are:

Internal card: Dish Network transmits its HD using Turbo 8PSK modulation. Your first problem would be finding an internal sat card that will demodulate that. The only one I know of is the Genpix Skywalker-2. Your next problem is the decryption. Dish is using Nagra-3 and you need to subscribe, then get the keys keys off your N3 card. That means getting a card reader and setting up card sharing or something equivalent. Your third problem is that the Skywalker has no BDA drivers (although there was a development effort for a while, but I don't know its status), so ..... it no workie with GBPVR.

External Device: Alternatively, there is a company that sells a service of modifying your Dish Network tuner to export the decrypted signal. I think the device is called the R5000. A Google search should find it. It's supposed to work with Media Center and another PVR, but I've never heard of anyone using one with GBPVR, so, again, you'd probably be out of luck.

If you find an answer, let me know. I'd be interested.

This one is from Nextcom Wireless. I've not heard good things about the MCE driver though. It can't be used with multiple tuners, it's pretty flakey, etc. I considered getting Dish and trying to write a recording device plugin for it (like I originally did with the HDHomeRun) but it was a rediculous amount of money IMO by the time I purchased a receiver + the mod.

The HD-PVR is the best option.

HD PVR then it is.

Does GBPVR play nice with HD PVR or are there still issues?

I too have been struggling with this issue. I thought the HD PVR was the only solution until I stumbled across these two items:

http://www.meritline.com/mygica-x8550a-p...36181.aspx

http://www.electronics4pc.com/servlet/th...DTV/Detail

They appear to be the same card. What I like is that they provide a composite-YPbPr cable that should allow for HD recording. The best part is that the Mygica is only $50 delivered to your door.

I cannot find any reviews or information on this card, so I have no idea how well it works.

This is just SD component YPbPr video, not HD.

The HD they're referring to is only via ATSC and Clear QAM

I'm sorry, I'm a bit ignorant about these things. How can you tell it's SD and not HD? Just asking for a little help so I understand. Thanks.

I know because I've had a few sample devices that had component video, based on the same types of chips, and that only do accept SD over their component-YPbPr input. The price was also a pretty good indication - if it had recorded analog HD over component video, it would have been a lot more expensive, and they'd have been been making a big deal about having the only device to do it.

They also say it on the page, but they dont point it out very clearly.

Quote:Watch digital cable HDTV on PC (QAM)
Supports HDTV for ATSC over antenna(US/Canada/Mexico format)
Digital inputs allowing HDTV. ie 1080i, 720p etc

Quote:Support multiple inputs (RCA,S-Video, YPbPr) for capturing external videos in DVD format (MPEG)
Analog inputs allowing SD. DVD formats are up to a max of 720x480 NTSC or 720x576 PAL.

There may be a new option coming for those with R5000-HD modded boxes. DVBLogic is working on a BDA wrapper: http://dvblogic.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=3879

I approached Nextcom Wireless about doing this to add support for GBPVR but they did not seem too interested at the time. I'm going to keep an eye on it and see how it progresses.

I have been an analog only person so far, but I expect I might go digital some day. How does the HD content get from the Dish receiver to your HDTV, and why wouldn't there be a connector on an HD capture card to accept that input?
