Is there something special in GbPVR that needs to be done to create abd use a custom task? I created a task for Hulu Desktop, restarted the config applet, and Hulu Desktop showed up in the list of plugins as expected. However, when I start Pvrx2, the custom task does not show up in the menu. I also tried a test with something easy like notepad.exe, but it also did not show in the menu.

Create the task.
Exit Config.
Restart Config.
Enable the previously created task.
Exit Config.
Start PVRx2.

Also make sure to drag the task above "Exit".

Does it show up if you use the standard blue skin?

That's one thing I never tried - I'll check it out tonight. I did read something in the wiki about custom tasks possibly not working with TV out. It says "These external applications will not display on the TV Out port of the PVR350 card", so I'm not sure if this applies to all TV out systems or not. My setup does not include a PC monitor, just component to an HDTV.

Note: Yes, I did try the Blue Skin with the same results.

I just tried adding the custom task above the Exit button and it made no difference - still nothing appears in the GbPvr menu.

According to your logs, your custom tasks should be showing. You should see "Weather2" right above "Exit". "Netflix Search" should be right below "System":
