I have GBPVR working fine with my HVR-2250 tuner card, but I am having no luck setting up my client/ server so I can watch my files and stream live TV from my server box in Cleveland and watch on my client computer in FL.

Sever is XP Home and Client is Vista Business 32 bit.
[COLOR="Sienna"]
My goals:
1) Stream live TV over the net like the sling box pro.
2) Stream live TV over the home network.
3) Set my server computer to record using the web and home network
4) Watch files on my server over the net(not home network) to my client[/COLOR]

I have read the WIKI and many of the threads on Networking, but it just is not clear on how to set up the Client to to search the web for the proper DSN address. I have turned off my firewall on the Server and still can not see the web page to set the recorder over the web. http://000.000.00.00:7647/gbpvr/index.aspx (using my DSN number for my wifi router).http://111.222.33.44:7647/gbpvr/Login.aspx does not work either.

Should I be using the DSN of the computer itself? If so where do I fine the DSN in XP?

I have set the GBPVR file folders on the server for sharing over the network as instructed on my C:\Program Files\devnz\gbpvr\ and F: drive (record folder).

Under instruction #6 on the WIKI under Networking it says: At the right side of the page, there will be 4 fields (Server, recordings share, live tv buffer share, Database share. Fill these in with the server’s name and the three shares that you created.

Do I need to place the DSN number there and then the folders of just the home network name and destination?

Any cheat sheet instruction sheet would be helpfull. I will try again from the Wiki under PC Client. Thank you for your help

I don't know what upload capacity you have from your server to the internet.
It probably won't be enough for what you want.
If you use a router you would have to forward the ports gbpvr is using, in the server. Maybe you have to open those ports in the routers firewall aswell.

Edit: maybe you are better of using the EWA. You have lesser network stuff there and you can configure the bandwidth you want to use.

it doesn't work from over the internet for client, only EWA...
mostly because of security differences over the internet, [most of the filters weren't designed for such fragmentation]
but also impossible cuz of speed, unless you have a higher-speed T1 line to your house, you'll never reach speeds high enough...[like 10Mbps needed outgoing..DSL is like 512k at best, for the most expensive dsl packages]

for local network access, use streaming client, use the browse buttons to pick the share, and choose streaming if you want livetv, or filesharing if you have mostly prerecorded..
the server name should be just that, the server name..like for \\pvr1\gbpvr, just the 'pvr1' part...[case sensitive] [notice his examples]

for internet access, EWA will provide what you are looking for...not same interface, but almost every feature plus some more not available in regular gui...Smile
and you can either stream, or for full resolution, download file and play locally...
[and you'll see how slow you connect output is]
to access EWA check the wiki...

OK I guess this is what I needed clarified- that you cannot stream over the internet, but only through a home network. I figured if a slingbox can stream live TV that possibly GBPVR could as well.

I suppose I can just use the Slingbox Pro of HAVA box to steam my cable in Ohio to FL and then I can hook the GBPVR box to the Slingbox like a DVR and control the computer by a virtual computer if I wanted to watch content on the GBPVR server.

I have never used a SlingBox so I will look up threads to see if they really work or are just a waste of money.

That is exactly I am looking for. I have no problem setting up the Home network Server/Client and do have that working. I will research ORB and this plug in.

Thanks.Smile

You can do all this with EWA - you might want start off looking at your "3) Set my server computer to record..." set it up on your home network first though... once you've done that the rest just follows on...

For streaming media over the internet, one option is to get an IP address from someone like dyndns and set up your router to make EWA on your server accessible.

I just setup a free account with LogMeIn, installed the LogMeIn client on my server. I can login from anywhere, open EWA on the server and I can check/setup recordings and whatever else I want to do on my server. LogMeIn is not much use for streaming audio and video though, but I've never really wanted to do that anyway.

I've just had a quick look at ORB. AFAICS, if you install ORB on your media server, you can log on to www.orb.com from anywhere and stream your home media to all sorts of devices. The ORB plugin for EWA allows you to install and setup ORB and maintain your ORB account from within EWA.

Why would you use Logmein to log in on your server to open ewa, if you can open ewa directly from anywhere? Or is it a ports thingy?
