Going to be starting my GB-PVR setup tonight. Smile

Is it possible to use an external TV tuner attached to one computer, recording to a storage device on another computer (attached with 100Mbit Etherhet)?

So, you'd have:

Upstairs computer with TV tuner
Downstairs computer with 3TB disk

...will this work reasonably well, or is it a bad idea? The thought is that the upstairs computer (our bedroom) will be more quiet with less disk (and the satellite box is there that we'll want to control via IR blaster), and the downstairs computer is in a utility room with a long HDMI cable to a television in a separate room downstairs.

Any guidance? Should I be throttling the quality of the live TV recording or something?

LOL - ok, found my answers on the wiki:

Can tuners be spread out across different computers?
No, as of the moment only the server can make recordings.

What kind of network do I need to reliably play back recordings over it?
The minimum recommended network type is a 100mbs wired ethernet network.

So, let me refine my question a little bit:

If I were to map a Windows network drive (example, mapping X: to \\server\fileshare), can I record to that drive, if the upstairs computer was configured as a server?

In essence, the files are still downstairs where it's quiet, and the recordings can happen upstairs where the satellite box is...

Yes, you can record to a network drive, but you'll need to use UNC paths instead of mapped drives, since the recording service runs as a different user and doesnt see your mappings.

You'll also want to edit config.xml on the system running GBPVR and change the following line from:

<AutoRemoveMissingRecordings>true</AutoRemoveMissingRecordings>

to:

<AutoRemoveMissingRecordings>false</AutoRemoveMissingRecordings>

Otherwise GBPVR will delete the recordings from its database should the downstairs computer be offline for some reason while the upstairs computer is still running.

On a clear disk, you can seek forever...
