Hi,
I have recently purchased 2 hard drives model number WD1600JS-62MHB5.Both of these drives have been removed from Sagem IHD 91 pvr boxes.

When plugging these drives into an external usb caddy my pc recognises them but then wont let me do anything with the drive ie format, read or write data to them.

Having done a google search it seems that people are having the exact same issues with drives they have removed from the same sagem pvr.

Is it possible that the pvr is changing the firmware? If so then how can i get these drives back to factory firmware so that they are useable hard drives. I have a test system that i have used to test the drives but the message i receive is "drive is not locked", but the system can see all the drive details.

Does anyone have any ideas of where i can go from here?

Any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Mark

A low level format of the drive might fix this?

Since you cannot use the drives right now it might be worth a try?

probably just needs the mbr replaced with a normal one.. [fdisk /mbr]
you can use a good partition software to set it up easily i bet..like Acronis products or gparted or many others..
low level format can ruin drives if not done properly, and most modern ones don't allow it at all..
[it's usually not a good idea]

windows doesn't let you do anything [including delete] partition schemes it doesn't understand...
other utils do tho..Smile

Search for bcwipe-total, you can download a test version and make a bootable cd.
When you select the options for the bootable cd, you need it to wipe the mbr and the protected sectors of the drive.
Install the drive in a pc and wipe the drive.
