I agree with Martin here. A separate NPVR wiki is the way to go.

I also offer my assistance in creating this documentation wiki.

Thanks for your work in the past steeb. No need to commit yourself any further since there is a clean slate to work with.

I really should have learned my lesson by now and not get posting on this forum after going to the pub on a friday night for a pint, that turned into a 'few'...

I would like to commit to helping with a new wiki for N-PVR but only if I can be of genuine help.

And when I say 'new wiki' I did have in mind what Martin stated as in a new and separate wiki concurred by McBain, to try and mess with existing GB-PVR wiki I think would be disastrous.

I agree a nice new clean wiki to go with the nice new clean code sub has done in the nice new clean NPVR.

And if this is the way we go I think we need to do something about getting something started fairly soon so new visitors don't get put off by not being able to find "the answers" & skins & plugins &...............

Well me like this.

So I offer my services.

I really would like to talk to blader about this and know where he stands, I never really got the whole history behind GBPVR wiki and I personally would love another chat with him.

Does anyone else like this?

After all I've got some ideas for a new wiki, but I'm a very artistically based person and others may have a different idea?

I'm convinced that documentation, websites and the like are much better created by those with an artistic bent who pick up the techie info rather than techies who try to be artistic. In fact documentation is best written by technical "thickies" who do not make assumptions about existing knowledge of their readers.

I think NPVR is sufficiently different to warrant a new wiki of it's own and to take advantage of being able to clear out the dross that may have built up over the years. A nice fresh, bright start in fact.

Well done for volunteering Big GrinBig Grin

My background is technical with a strong opinion of usability, complimented with a black hole in the artistic department...

When I found GBPVR (back in 2004 I believe), it had this well structured plugin system that let people write their own plugins and skins. Some plugins were posted on the gbpvr-web page, but sub needed to manually put them there from incoming emails.

What I wanted to do was to let each plugin author have their own space where they could document and provide updated downloads for the plugins, thus lessen the burden on sub and also keep all plugins centralised, where you could go and look for new and updated stuff. I also collected the available documentation and tried to get a page for each of the tabs in the configuration program, and there collect information about what the settings did. And that was the beginning of the gbpvr-wiki.

My targeted audience was from the beginning people like myself, that with some technical know-how
had found gbpvr or a plugin, installed it, and started to think about what the settings was there for.

And last, why PmWiki? Why not? Well it was, and I think it still is, one of the best wiki engines out there (and at the time I started the wiki, I wanted a file system backend to avoid database version mismatches). PmWiki gives you a tremendous box of automation tools that creates lists, links, filters and other stuff dynamically on-the-fly.

Technically, a new wiki just means a new base URI, right? So, artistify away and if you'd like any implementation thoughts, just shoot them in this direction ;-)

I have to thank blader for responding to my PM, as usual.

I also would like to make clear that my reason for creating a new N-PVR wiki is VERY selfish!

I'm still using GB-PVR but I have no doubt that I will move to N-PVR once it begins to work as well as my almost perfect GB-PVR system.

In the meantime the best way for me to get to know N-PVR is not through the forums but firstly through the wiki.

So I'm just going through some processes that make this work for me:

1) Contacting blader to find out history of GB-PVR wiki (sorted, contact and great response)
2) Checking with sub to make sure a new wiki for N-PVR or whatever it may be called is worth working on. Haven't done this yet! [Edit] have done this and response is good [end Edit]

There are about 4 more points for me then I would start a new wiki!

for those that read this documentation stuff, great!

cheers

Think there is enough in place now for me to suggest to myself to start a new N-PVR wiki thread....
