Hi,

Been using NPVR for a few months now since the first beta, and have found over time that it's getting less stable for me. Currently whenever I try and record something it will work once or twice then fail part way through recording the program.

When this happens NPVR is showng the program as recording in NPVR, but it never stops. At this stage if I try and delete a program in NPVR then NPVR will hang as well. I then have to exit NPVR, restart the NRecord service, then restart NPVR again. At this stage I get a load of missed recordings with message like "Recording device not running" for the missed recordings, then it works again for one or two recordings.

I cant see anything obvious in the logs, but have attached them just iin case. Happened this evening whilst recording "Chuck".

Also found that sometimes Nrecord.exe is crashing (but not always) so have attached a log file created in case this helps as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?
Thanks,

Darrell.

I have this issue to. seems to be when I use my HVR-1600. but it may be the Microsoft Network Provier filter not being found.

Yeah, that's the same issue I've had occaisionally going all the way back to GB-PVR. The problem occurs when the recording service tries to stop a recording, and the first call to tear down the graph doesn't return; that part of the recording service then just goes into a coma and does nothing else ever again.
Yours happened here:
Code:
2010-09-23 00:57:00.187    [DEBUG][6]    Stopping recording (4194). Past end time of recording.
2010-09-23 00:57:00.187    [INFO][6]    DigitalRecorder.StopStream() handle: 6
2010-09-23 00:57:00.187    [INFO][6]    No more streams active. Stopping device.
2010-09-23 00:57:00.187    [DEBUG][6]    Graph stopping...
After that there is supposed to be a "Graph Stopped" message, but it never comes. After this no further programs will be recorded until you restart the recording service. It's theoretically a windows or driver problem, as evidenced by the fact that GB-PVR had exactly the same problem, but NRecord needs to have some sort of failsafe where it can recover from this condition. The graph actually does stop; the recording is always perfectly playable and is the correct length (well, it always is for me, I presume you would find it playable as well).

This happened to me again just tonight, the recording service got hung up trying to stop a recording at 6:00pm, and I didn't notice it until midnight. This week is the beginning of the fall TV season here, so we missed a bunch of season and series premieres tonight. My wife is going to be pissed when she finds out, as 4 of missed shows are her shows.

edit: by the way, yes sub I do remember that you wanted a dump of nrecord.exe from task manager when it does this. I forgot about it until about 2 seconds after I stopped the recording service. sorry.

Ah. I guess you'd call that a good news / bad news situation then. Smile

So it's a known issue but we don't know how to fix it! Smile

The situation described would make sense with what I'm seeing. I have a hauppauge twin tuner card would would be why I usually get two recordings before it locks up. One recording per tuner, then it's run out of tuners until I reboot the oc or restart services and npvr.

So is there anything I can do to help? Checks it tests? Additional logs? Just one last point, I can't always play the recordings created. Sometimes I just get a few minutes of the recording instead of the whole thing.

In the meantime I'll check the hauppauge website and make sure I'm on the latest drivers etc.

Cheers, Darrell.

Hmmm thinking about it, could it be something to do with the filters I'm using? I've never really understood the setup of these and current use FFDShow as it seems to work for everything. E.G. TS, MPG, MP4 etc... Although I have a side issue in that I can't fast forward as this often freezes. If I leave the PC alone for ages it can eventually catch up, but more often than not I have to esc from the recording then select and resume.

Anyway it occurred to me that if the problem happens when trying to remove the graph (which I think is something to do with the filters being used to decode a specific media stream), then could the use of a different filter resolve the problem? This could also explain why some people have the same issue in GBPVR and NPVR as they are likely to still be using the same filters, and perhaps why everyone doesn't have the same problem.

So if you have this problem as well, are you using FFDSHOW? Does anyone have the problem with different filters?

Or am I way off base here? Smile

BTW I am using the Hauupaige WinTV Nova TD-500 card, which I believe is basically a couple of their USB tuners stuck on a card, in case that helps.

Cheers, Darrell.

yes, a bit off base, since you're talking about filters used for playback, but the problem occurs with recording.

Been thinking about this some more and I don't remember getting this problem with gbpvr. I'm going to go back and run that for a few days to see if I get a similar issue.
Cheers, Darrell.

Well just gone back to gbpvr for the last 24hours, and successfully recorded a dozen shows perfectly.

So I get this problem with npvr only. No changes to hardware or the settings.

Does that help narrow down the issue? Would it help if I posted some gbpvr logs to compare?

Cheers, Darrell.
