I guess this could apply to both gbpvr and npvr ??

With the introduction today of simultaneous SD and HD broadcasts of BBC 1 in the UK I was going to record a show in both SD and HD so that we can view the HD version at the weekend and keep the SD version in the archives (with its reduced size).

Then it struck me that the show name and start/stop date/time would be identical - could this be a potential problem with disc filenames????

If there is a file name clash, it'll add a number to the end of the filename,

It didn't work out like that.

Currently both shows appear as recording in the 'pending' screen of gbpvr, but only one shows as recording in the status screen and only one file is being created.
Recording(s) over.
Both recording show in the "new" screen, but only one has the "play" option, the other just close and delete.
SD was set for the nova-t-500 and HD for the s350 satellite tuner.

Logs attached if you have any interest in the gbpvr problem.
I will try the same thing tomorrow with npvr an see what happens and let you know.

a few log snippets.

If it doesnt work in NPVR, then I'll fix it. I'm fairly sure it'll work though.

Doing this I can confirm does work with 1.4.7 because I do it all the time for our Prime channel, recording the same program off analogue & DVB-S just in case the digital one doesn't record properly, the crappy analogue recording is better than no watchable recording at all when it is something special that the wife wants & much better for my overall well being.

The issue might be the fact that martin123's SD recording is mpeg.ps and the HD recording is h264 ts, so the file name are the same. GB-PVR doesn't seem to care about the extension, I think you can even replace a .mpg with a mkv or avi and it opens in recording. NPVR is very fussy and it will stall/timeout when the extension is changed.

Jaggys' example could be different if they both were mpg one would have the -1.mpg extension.

For me analogue is a .mpg & DVB-S is a .ts & below is a screenshot of one of the directories I have recorded both at the same time....

Mine are both digital. Anyway, gbpvr is frozen so it doesn't matter anyway.

On trying it with npvr, I get a name.ts and name-0.ts being recorded at the same time so all is well.......if it wasn't for the fact that I can only cancel the first one, trying to cancel the second one seems to hang npvr and nrecord. Restarting nrecord starts recording a third file, but at least it is possible to cancel it.

I'm not going to worry about this as the situation and circumstances were a bit artificial, but will keep my eyes open.

This seems to work fine for me in GBPVR, having just tested it with both .dvr-ms and .ts recording. In the latter case (where both SD and HD files had the same extension) it did the -1, -2 thing as expected.
