white dots at the top side of the video...

Hi guys,

The video displayed with GBPVR is not using the full window or the full screen...

I have a black horizontal bar on the top, then a line of *moving/shaking* white dots, and then the video...

I don't get the problem with WinTV, the video is correctly resized to the window size, or to the full screen size... White dots are not showing up on top of the image...

Anybody else has this problem ?

I think that white dots are generated by ELECARD mpeg 2 decoder. Try a different one or register (buy) it.

Those dots are the data for closed captions.

I guess WinTV is cutting out those scanlines, and GB-PVR isn't?

The black area is called the Vertical Blanking Interval, and it is the space between the finish of one image, and the start of another. It is used to transmit data from a TV station to a television, and it exists in all TV transmissions. Most TVs do not display this because they "overscan", or draw the image larger than your picture tube is able to display, cutting off the edges of the transmitted image. While this cuts off the VBI data at the top of the image on normal TV sets, it also cuts off the sides and the bottom. What it comes down to is this: If your TV software shows the VBI at the top, then the software is showing you the whole image that is being sent to you. If you are not seeing it, then your TV software is cutting out and throwing away some of your TV image. Although most people want to see as much of the image as they can, it does decrease the quality of compressed recorded video, as the video codec has to compress the extra data that changes every single frame, decreasing the compression ratio.... If you have your software set to display "all" the lines of resolution that are being transmitted to you(480 or 576), then the lines will be there....

enable ffdshow (download ffdshow if you dont have it, google it or search for it on sourceforge.net). then once you have the latest version (there was a version that came out in jan 2005, i think thats the latest). go to configuration (if there are more than one, look for the "video" configuration). there are options down the side, all sorts of video postprocessing stuff. click on "crop", enable it, then set the offsets, this will allow you to cut the rubbish out of the video.

I've posted previous questions regarding white lines on the bottom and right hand side of my screen when NOT in windowed mode (i.e. - full screen). Will the recommendations of ffdshow mentioned above relate to my problems? The op said he was justing having problems with white dots, not necessary static lines on the bottom and right side of the screen.

They are in normal TV, but your TV zooms in a little, so they are normally hidden.

Use your vid card to zoom in so bars/lines are offscreen.

There is no "fix", since this is normal, except to behave like the TV.
