Setting the aspect ratio to auto with mpeg2 sd has been working fine 16.9 content and 4.3 always show correctly.
I have just started using the UK DVB-T2 HD Channels with PDVD10 and DivX codecs - if the aspect ratio is set to auto the picture always starts in 4.3 ratio. If I then cycle through the different aspects, auto will then pick it up as 16.9 and change to a full screen.
The only way to get it to start correctly is to set it to Fill then remember last (or fill) in config screen. Then of cause all the 4.3 programs are stretched out to much!
Picture size on these HD channels appears to be 1440 x 1080i anarmorphic.

I'm seeing exactly the same since I changed to a 16:10 monitor on my htpc a week ago.

Edit: That is on HD shows.

If you can make a small sample recording available, I'll take a look.

I have a 16:10 monitor and this plays fine in auto for me. I use ffdshow if that helps.

just for the record I see exactly the same behaviour with freeview HD content played at 1080. Auto AR seems to fall back to 4:3. I have to run it as fill instead.

Just been checking this morning this doesn't happen if using the Arcsoft Video codec - Auto works - but unfortunately it can not cope with the freeview hd encoding. (lots of picture stuttering)
PDVD10 has faultless picture but doesn't recognise AR flag on starting. Once it is running cycling back to auto corrects it.

I tried that clip with the ArcSoft and ffdshow decoders, and these seemed to playback correctly.

I also tried the Microsoft DTV-DVD and that did have the problem. I'm not sure why though. I'll experiement for a bit to see if I can get it to behave though.

Thanks Sub

That's fixed it for PDVD10 - HD SD Live & Recorded all finding correct Aspect Ratio on Auto Setting.
