If your MB has firewire and your STB box does as well (and you have a cable), and you have a 32 bit OS (not likely based on your sig), you could install the timmmoore drivers and use the capDVHS program that's included in the driver package to see if you can capture anything. If you can, it's not protected, at least that's the way it is on my box from Charter.
You might also google for the manual for your STB. I think the manual for my moto box describes how to get into the diagnostics.
