I have a 16:10 monitor using a resolution of 1440X900. In GBPVR, when I used the FILL option to view widescreen recordings, the height of things looked correct and there were very small black bars above and below the recording. I assume due to being 16:9 recordings shown on a 16:10 monitor and resolution.

In NPVR, it doesn't matter if I select 16:9 or 16:10 in SETTINGS. I never have the black bars as described above and things are not the correct height. They are too narrow and tall. Is 16:10 not working in NPVR?

In SETTINGS > GENERAL, I have tried 16:9 and 16:10 and I also set the UI Resolution to 1440X900 trying to figure this out but it makes no difference.

I noticed something similar on my son's 16:10 display when I setup NPVR as a client. After playing a few seconds of a 16:9 show I went back into Settings to finish up where I noticed that the setting had defaulted to 16:9, so I changed it to 16:10 and noticed no difference at all when I played back the same file. It looked fine to me either way, so I didn't worry about it.

I guess I have an eye for detail because it looked wrong to me. Attached are screen shots from a recent widescreen recording. Using the layout of attachments shown below, the top right one is the video played in NPVR using the 16:10 setting (remember this makes no difference even if NPVR is set to 16:9). The top left one is the video played in GBPVR using the 16:10 setting I have always used. The bottom left one is the video played in VLC with the VLC aspect ratio set to 16:9. You can clearly see a difference between NPVR vs. GBPVR and VLC.

No, I'm REALLY picky about aspect ratio. My wife is fine watching stuff stretched out or cut off or whatever, I always drive her crazy coming in calling an "Aspect Ratio Foul" and then picking up the remote cycling through the aspect ratios. But on my son's computer (the only widescreen setup I have in the house) there were correctly bars above and below the image regardless of whether I chose 16:9 or 16:10, and the aspect ratio was right either way. In other words, I'm agreeing with you that something is fishy with the 16:9 and 16:10 settings, yet in my situation it happens to be wrong in the right way if that makes an sense.

I wonder if NPVR is not getting the correct monitor ratio. I am using 1440X900 which is a true 16:10 ratio. What are you using?

Looking at the 3 screen shots I took in post #3, I am astounded I got them all apparently at the exact same second in the video, lol.

My son's monitor is 1920x1200, which is also true 16:10.

The way sub explained the aspect ratios, the app doesn't care what the resolution of the display is, or whether the pixels are square or rectangular. All it cares about is what you tell it the shape of the TV is. This applies whether the aspect ratio of the display mode matches the shape of the TV or not - for example if you feed a 16:9 TV with a 1024x768 (4:3) signal, then you still set the TV shape to 16:9 and it works correctly. Windows and the Menus may be stretched funny since the 4:3 resolution is being stretched to fill the 16:9 tv, but the video will look right because the video renderer cares only about the shape of the TV.

If I get a chance tomorrow I'll fiddle some more with my son's system (if he'll stop playing his games for a few minutes) and see if I can see why the TV shape setting didn't seem to matter on his.

I was looking at the config.xml files for NPVR and GBPVR. All the numbers seem to match so I am still not sure what is going on with NPVR.
