If I wanted to record anything that started with "James May" (there a two programs that should be found on SBS HD) how could i do this?

To use the proper gui I imagine I could record one of them and then go fudge around in the database, would this be the only way to do it?

I did have a quick toodle in NEWA but not sure if I made a saved search to auto record or not, and then trying it again brought up an exception.

Any suggestions, if the first method will work, I have no issues doing it.

Manual Recording.

Advanced Rule: title like 'James May%'

At least I think that's the right syntax. someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I test and create searches in SearchLite and if it is something like this I pass it to NEWA as shown (Starts with James May)

Martin, what's the next step? Does that automatically make NEWA start doing recordings, or do you then have to go into NEWA and tell it to use that query somehow?

If you locate one of the programs in the EPG then do a record , recording type: Record All Episodes, All Channels.
Then go to the Recurring Recordings scree and Select the program then Update, go down to Advance Rule, backspace to delete the text you don't want then type back the %' so you end up with " title like 'James May%' ". OK, then check EPG to make sure it's worked.

ah, yes, good idea smiffypvr. the All Episodes, All Channels recording type really just creates an Advanced Rule Manual Recording, so you can use that to create the basic recording then modify it. I knew that, just didn't connect the two.

I think sub added an option in setting for "start with" matching (I found this very useful with gbpvr) for some shows that kept changing a suffix.
However, there doesn't seem to be a way to create a minimal "starts with" that can then be used.
The alternative of the SQL-style matching is a different way to achieve the same object.
I might well try editing an EPG entry by shortening the title and then set that one up for a season record with the config option set.
