I'm running the 29/8 version of 2.6.6 on XP

I left NPVR paused for a while and when I came back there was an error on the screen saying NRecord.exe had died.

When I try to start the recording service I get the following message:

Unable to start service: System.ServiceProcess.TimeoutException: Time out has expired and the operation has not been completed.
at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController.WaitForStatus(ServiceControllerStatus desiredStatus, TimeSpan timeout)
at NCtrl.Program.Main(String[]args)

I deleted the program files/NPVR folder and re-installed, still the same. I tried starting it from Services and I get the error on the screen saying NRecord.exe had died.

I have rebooted between steps, no difference.

HELP!

I've restored an archive (of the windows partition) from Friday, when I was running 2.1.5, and the problem is still here.
So what can be causing this problem?

I was thinking what could "update" itself onto an archive as soon as I rebooted, so I removed Avast (antivirus) and Spybot, and the recording service will now run!
I re-installed spybot, but without allowing automatic updates, still OK. I then updated spybot, (and re "immunized"), still OK.
Next I re-installed Avast, still OK, then updated it, still OK. Re-installed NPVR 2.2.6, and everything is still OK.

I'm sure it was something to do with spybot, but it seems OK now.

smiffypr I have had that "time out exception" message right from early testing of NextPVR (at times) on this old snail test rig computer & what I have found is for me it's the slow old system HDD not not keeping up, what I do is just wait after the message for the HDD light to stop blinking & then stop the recording service again & then restart it & 99% of the time it will then start without a problem.

That's not what was happening here. It normally starts in about 2 seconds, when it was failing, it must have taken 20 seconds at least.
When I fist suspected spybot, I found that the Teatimer.exe process was using a whole cpu core for the time that the services was trying to start, but when I killed that process, DW20.exe (the Windows Error Reporting tool) took its place (in terms of CPU use), but when I un-installed spybot, the problem went away.
Now everything is back the way it was when I had the problem except that spybot is set not to update itself. A bit of a mystery.

Did anyone get to the bottom of this?
It stopped my NPVR, I cannot get back in, and the devices windows went blank too.

Fortunately I had an old but recent npvr.db3, so popped that back in and redid some settings, good to go, must have got corrupted somehow.
