I've been reading about the Android-based STB's and media players for quite a while now, and I've seen several like this that look very interesting as possibilities but nothing differentiates them and I am worried they have no reputation, lack user-to-user support, likely come without licenses for mpeg, mp3 and other proprietary a/v codecs. and with no idea if ICS is in the their future they might be a tough sell.

Hi Martin,

Interesting comment but from the specs of the device Reddwarf linked to...

Quote:
  • Video supported: M-JPEG,MPEG-1,MPEG-2,MPEG-4,H.263,H.264,VC-1,DivX,Xvid,RealVideo,VP6,Sorenson Spark
  • Audio supported: AAC-LG/HEAAC/HE-AAC,v2,AC3,AMR-NB,DTS,MP3,OGG,RA_COOK,WMA,WMAPRO,LPCM/PCM/ADPCM/FLA
Are you saying that the support for mpeg, mp3 etc is (or might be) illegal on this device?

Cheers,
Brian

I can't say anything about this specific device, but it is often a consideration with imports because these HK or Chinese distributors are selling wholesale, depending on the the retailer to license them. The chips have the support and it is the license that makes them legal. The A100 is a good example it didn't have DTS and license for some BD content that was available on the A110. Also when the A100's were first shipping I even remember reading that they were being blocked from entry into the EU from China while their mp3 license was confirmed.

Back to Reddwarf's site certainly a link like this (at the bottom of the page) should certainly raise some questions. http://help.dealextreme.com/Frequently%2...ngement_44

I'm not saying that you would have a problem buying one, I'm saying these are the type of things I consider when I look at devices to consider if they are "suitable" clients. I don't want anyone to get burnt.

If you can buy it legally and it works, what's the problem Wink

A financial transaction made via the Internet that clears customs does not by definition make it legal. Half the spam I receive seems to be related to some form of prescription drug, a "Rollex" at a great price, or about helping a millionaire get his money out of his native country. Caveat emptor, but if I am planning on spending 100's of hours on a client, I want it to be satisfied that no one is making a bad decision.

Can any of you play .ts files on your android devices? because I can't find anything that will play my recordings unless I transcode them to something else. this would be my droid 3 that i am using.

Yes I can play .ts files (mpeg2 and h264 video) on either an Android 2.3 phone or Android 2.1 tablet (including livetv) but wifi of HD is very iffy so I would need to play via sdcard. I use either Moboplayer or MX Player if that helps.
