I use LAV Splitter to play back my blu-ray rips (index.bdmv) in NPVR. Some of them play back with very little CPU usage and when I check in graphedit the video is listed as 'AVC1' using the 'Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder'. However, some of them have significantly more CPU usage and graphedit reports them as 'WVC1' using the 'WM Video Decoder DMO'. Can anyone help me get accelerated playback for these 'WVC1' types? I have tried to register the LAV Video filters but these never seem to be used. Thanks.

AVC1 is H.264 and will always use less CPU resources to decode than VC-1. If you are running Windows 7, you can change the default codecs with Preferred Filter Tweaker for Windows 7 which can be found at http://www.codecguide.com/windows7_prefe...weaker.htm

Your options for H.264 are Microsoft, LAV and MPC
Your options for VC-1 are Microsoft or MPC

You can also modify the registry directly to use different decoders but I can't remember the exact registry locations at the moment. I'll post full instructions later when I get a chance.

Note that LAV only includes hardware decoding support for Intel and NVidia.

Edit: There may be other options in the codec tweaker for VC-1 and it's possible it's only showing those because it's the only ones I have on my machine that support VC-1.

Thanks for the awesome information, whurlston! I've just started taking the plunge into the (seemingly) more complicated world of HD encoding and playback on computers; this helps me a lot!

Darn my job doing simplistic health systems server support! ;-D
