I woke up this morning and noticed that one of my HDHR tuner lights were lit but knew I had nothing scheduled to record. I checked and it was still recording a show I did set last night.
I stopped the recording service and it did stop recording but my HDHR tuner is still showing it's in use. I was able to stop the tuner but I don't know why it recorded so long. I did notice last night that for a short while, 2 tuners were recording the same show but I don't see 2 instances of the recording anywhere.
Logs attached.

I had this happen to me a while back with my DCR-2650, but it never happened again (and I might have installed one of the patches shortly afterwards) so I just let it go.

It happened once to me with the HDHR Dual. I was never able to reproduce it so I never reported it.

I took a quick look before I left from work to see what it recorded because there is no time clock on the file in any of the programs I tried to watch it in. Nothing that tells me that I'm, say, 1:10 into it. I did see some programs that look like they were late night/early morning shows.....infomercials and the very early morning news.
This has happened in the past but not often. However, the last time it happened, I also had 3 or 4 shows recording at the same time like I did this time. Maybe the fact that it was a number of shows at once using 1 USB tuner, 1 internal and 1 HDHR (well.both the HDHR tuners).

I experienced something similar. Looking at my logs and those posted by pcostanza something we have in common is that the affected recordings failed to start on their allocated device, and were re-allocated to a backup device.

Last night I had scheduled 7 recordings. At the scheduled start of three of those recordings, the recording service log shows “Failed to start recording on allocated device … Device failed to start” followed by “Found possible backup device”, and the recording starting.
At the appropriate end time for each of those three recordings the recording service log shows “Stopping recording … Past end time of recording … StopStream”. However the three recording were still active this morning some 12 hours after the first of their scheduled end times. The files had reached almost 50GB each and were still growing in size. I’ve checked and they were actually still recording the broadcasts on the appropriate channels.

The other four recordings scheduled last night ended normally. None of the unaffected recordings were re-allocated to a backup device, and all three recordings that failed to stop were re-allocated to a backup device.
The three problem recordings in the attached logs were:

Interesting! So far, this has not happened again but I will wait until Thursday night when the same programs are scheduled for recordings again.

I get this every couple of days.
The status shows the same show on two tuners, but it keeps recording to a single file until I restart the service.
As you say, it seems to happen when a recording is re-allocated to another tuner.

Log attached. See 2012-02-14 05:28:20.264.

I just had this happen to me again last night but some very specific steps were involved for me this time:

I had a series recording previously set up for "Alcatraz" which was scheduled to record @ 9PM. I have been having issues with everything I record on that specific channel where a glitch in the stream would cause me to lose the ability to skip fwd/back, so at about 7:50PM (just before nightly recordings started) I removed that channel from my channel mappings for the HDHomeRun tuners so that Alcatraz would record with a local tuner. At 9:30, my tuner status showed that Alcatraz was being recorded by both my VistaView tuner and one of the 2250 tuners (only one file was created though). Today the status showed that the VistaView was still recording (the 2250 was inactive) and the file had grown to 105GB. Restarting the recording service cleared the tuner.

All logs attached.

On the plus side, I have a 16 hour recording with no stream errors and full skip functionality. Big Grin

I've not hit this problem again but since it twice happened during the Thursday scheduled recordings, I'll wait and see.
However, it does appear that my recording service is shutting down on its own as last night, nothing recorded nor did I even show that it attempted to. But, I noticed that the RS was stopped. This appears to be a separate issue and one that I am watching closely for now to see if it's related to my Ceton USB tuner.
Since I got new firmware for the Ceton USB, I sometimes hear the USB sound (twice, once off and then on) but it never stays off long enough for me to check. I likely have too much going on at one time and should really remove 1 from the equation to check properly.

Again in this case the problem seems to follow-on from "Failed to start recording on allocated device ... Found possible backup device".
It's almost as if the re-allocation of the recording to a backup device isn't taken into account when the time comes to stop the recording - I'm sure that's a gross over-simplification, but you get what I mean.
