I downloaded the latest version. I had read earlier about copying certain files and pasting them over the old ones but when I opened the download it was just about installing the program. I let it reinstall. After restarting I tried to record but got "no device" and then an unhandled exception message which I've listed below. I've tried recording now for several days but the same error. The recording device has been working for months now and continues to work on a Cyberlink video editing program. I do remember I had a hard time getting all the (over my head) technical adjustments to make my card work when I first installed nvpr a year ago.

This is the latest error message:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer

You shouldn't be pasting any old files over new ones. That'd probably break things. Some people backup their config.xml and npvr.db3, that's just as a backup in case they need to go back to the old version. If you overwrite the newer versions these files with old ones, you'll almost certainly break it.

Are you using the default skin, or something else? From that error It looks like you might be running some old skin that is missing stuff the app needs.

Either way, reproduce the problem and post the npvr.log.

post the NPVR log after viewing the Devices screen. My guess it will probably say the mpeg mux isn't found, and that it's disabled analog support, which will mean you need to get wintv7/softpvr installed (see thread in my signature, which points to relevant wiki instructions).

OK. I did a complete restore back to when it was working. However the version number stays the same. I read one is supposed to put logs etc in zip format so I did. Very little clue as to what any of the contents mean however. Maybe if someone would be kind enough to state exactly the entry I need to add to analog devices file I might have a chance of this thing working again.

Something seems really fouled up about your install. I suggest you preserve your recording-backup.xml and recurring-backup.xml files, along with any scripts you need to save, and then delete the whole NPVR data directory (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NPVR). Then re-download and install 2.5.9, configure it and then post if you still have problems. Once you get it working you can import your xml files to get your recordings back.

Also, it will be easier for all if you just put the various log files into the .zip file, rather than copy-pasting all the log text into one file.

Thanks. By sheer luck, I was tidying up my desktop and I saw I had made a backup of that analog devices file.I had forgotten about it. I did this last year after having to wade in way over my head in technical matters I knew nothing about. I opened it, copied the contents and then went to the actual file in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NPVR . Opened it in notepad and pasted it over the old and now the device is recognized and records. I think many people don't have the time, inclination and/or training to persevere with the technical roadblocks that this program presents. Once it's up and running it's fine. I would think the installation should do more things automatically like most programs or apps that one gets today. Thanks for trying to help.

Thanks for the back-handed gratitude. For the sort of help you wanted, I bill at $135 per hour. For free help given on my own time, I didn't want to spend hours or days of back-and-forth posts trying to figure out what you'd done to screw up your installation when wiping and re-installing would be quicker for both of us.

edit: I'm not going to edit what I wrote above, but it has occurred to me that I might have taken what you wrote in the wrong light. I took at as being directed at me, that I didn't try hard enough to help you before calling for the wipe and re-install step. The way I read it now it was a more general criticism of NextPVR itself, though I honestly find that just as unfounded. Something was more broken in your install than just a missing AnalogDevices.xml entry; my guess now is that the file you had was corrupt somehow, which produced the unhandled exception and the missing lines in your npvr.log (what your npvr.log didn't say is what led me to ask for the wipe/re-install - I figured a file might be corrupt, but didn't know whether it might be config, analogdevices, devicerules, or some other). Whatever was broken in there though, you broke it. NextPVR is a simple program, with a simple installation procedure. I think many get into trouble by believing it's somehow more complicated than it is, and try to copy files over or fiddle with this or that when they should just leave it alone.

I think many people don't have the time, inclination and/or training to persevere with the technical roadblocks that this program presents.
1.- Did you share your analogdevices xml settings when you finally got it working a year ago? A simple forum search would have retrieved that Wink

2.- Tell me which free (or even paid) PVR backend software works out of the box with each and every single card available in the world. Like johnsonx42 implied, your response was somewhat rude, and dismissive of the time and effort taken by him and the developer of npvr (sub) in promptly trying to help solve your issues.

3.- Those "many" that don't have the time or inclination to setup a stable working htpc, should just buy a commercial STB and be done with. Then, after finding out that those also have technical issues, they should try getting customer support to help them...

I saw the original error and was going to suggest that you made an error and corrupted the xml file. Even with perfect support if you make an error editing an xml file it's not going to work. I agree that analog setup can be a nuisance, it is only designed for people who have WinTV installed, the fact that it can work for others is a bonus.
