Located in Northwest Florida, USA. I have a dual tuner ATSC HDHomeRun which is networked to a Lenovo Q-190 running Windows 8 and used solely as an HTPC. I installed NPVR on the Q-190, worked through various firewall and decoder issues, and now have everything working except - no closed captions on NPVR playback. While I can play the .ts files with captions on VLC, I lose the 10 second skip forward Lenovo remote control function that works with NPVR but not with VLC. I've read in the forum that I probably need the MainConcept decoder with CC pin. I've downloaded the MainConcept Showcase demo package which supposedly contains an MPEG-2 decoder that displays captions. (MainConcept literature says the Showcase "demo" files will work as normal but will add a watermark - I'd like to know that they work before making a purchase.) I don't know how to get NPVR to "see" the MainConcept decoder. I've used MainConcept meritme.exe to register the demo_dec_mp2v_ds.ax. Running cmd.exe as administrator, I tried to register the decoder's dll file with regsvr32 but received the "demo_dec_mp2v.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found" error message. The MainConcept decoder does not appear in NPVR settings-decoders. At this point, I'm stymied. Can anyone offer step by step instructions to install/register a decoder that will display closed captions in NPVR. (Note - I've experimented with CCExtractor to generate a .srt file from a .ts file. The process is messy - timing/sync is off by as much as 10 seconds and varies from file to file, takes multiple trial and error extractor runs to get a working .srt file, and is not a practical solution.) Thanks.

In case you have to resort to .srt, or as a preliminary solution, tou should use Telxcc (https://github.com/forers/telxcc) to extract subtitles.

The MainConcept decoder discussed here is probably the one that comes with the Hauppauge WinTV package, HCW_mcm2vd.ax You might be able to install it in a manner similar to how SoftPVR is installed via the wiki instructions.

If CCExtractor doesn't work for you I doubt you will find a better srt method.

The Telxcc program has better timing logic.

Does it even work with North American style ATSC closed captioning?

It was originally written for that purpose.

When I looked at the help on the web site it sure looks like it is for teletext.

Solved!!!..........Well, sort of. Posting here helped me think it through. Windows 8 system is 64 bit so I originally downloaded and installed MainConcept's 64 bit Showcase package without success. Tonight, since NPVR is 32 bit, I downloaded and installed Showcase 32 bit. Bingo! MainConcept popped right up in Settings-Decoders-MPEG2 Video. Control-X, toggle to Captions, and there they are. As promised in MainConcept's literature, there is a full-time water mark/logo in the upper right corner of the screen. Buying their codec is supposed to eliminate that. Problem now, though, is my Q-190's processing speed and capacity. NPVR Playback with captions while NPVR is also recording is maxing out my CPU, causing video choppiness. Guess I won't be recording and watching with captions at the same time.

I just tried with an i7 on Win7 and hcw_mm2vd.ax takes about 10% CPU It's a lot more powerful than a celeron but might be worth a try.
