I'm really just getting started with NPVR. (former SageTV user)
I have been testing it for a couple of weeks and things are coming together.

I have been using the MS EPG data, and was wondering what the Schedules Direct data looked like.

Do I understand I have to remap all my present channels and point them to SD?
Is there a way to save the present mappings if I decide not to continue with SD?

The EPG that SageTV uses is quite complete, with release dates, actors, guest actors, original run date, etc.

Can someone tell me (with some detail) the benefit of SD over MS.

Thanx!

No difference in data mainly because NextPVR is world centric and not North America centric when it comes to displaying info and sub doesn't provide the extras like cast etc.

Why use it then? If people don't support SD and it fails because they opt for a "grey" solution, if MS ever decide that it is worthwhile to secure their protocol then there is no viable alternative in North America and we end up with digital VCRs.

I just check my monthly cable bill and they hide the EPG fee as

Digital Services Fee $2.99

As far as I can tell, the legacy MS EPG data (the one you can get with the free version of MC2XML) is exactly the same data as you get from Schedules Direct (both are Zap2It! / Tribune Media). The important difference is that using Schedules Direct is legal, MC2XML is not. As Martin points out, that could be very important.
