NPVR settings GUI access via remote desktop

Hi,

I run XBMC as a front end for live TV, with a centralised NPVR server providing all the behind-the-scenes stuff. I usually only use the NPVR GUI to configure the tuner settings, and I like to do this via remote desktop (RDP) to avoid disruption to XBMC running on the server PC.

Since installing version 3.1.1 of NPVR I've been unable to start NPVR in a RDP session. After a while the window will show up, but it's empty and stops responding when I try to interact with it. Perhaps someone could try to replicate this to make sure it's not unique to my system?

Also, is there a way of running NPVR so that it only displays the settings dialog? A command line switch perhaps?

Cheers,
Jon

I use NextPVR from an RDP session most days (whenever I'm using my laptop to do any development), and haven't noticed any issues.

Maybe reproduce the problem, and post the npvr.log.

What version of Windows is your server running?

Hi jonathan.holvey!

My system:
Win 7 x64 ultimate, NPVR 3.1.1, Technotrend TT-connect CT-3650 CI USB TV
ADSL 2M/384K

When I connect with RDP to above PC the connect speed from him is 384K an the graphics is very basic. The NPVR app starts and background picture "paints" arround 10 seconds. Then I can rightclick and select "Settings". If I click "live TV" the result is exactly as You described.
So I assume the reason is network connection speed is too low to bandwidth hungry application.
As is, NPVR is excellent application, but you have to know that video is very bandwidth demanding and RDPing may cause problems.

I also miss possibility to setup NPVR without start NPR GUI first.
The other problem is EPG. Many times I want to set recordings from Newa (from Android tablet), but EPG is deficient. So I have to restart NPVR service directly on NPVR computer.
Is there any possibility to include "force EPG update" or "restart NPVR service" in Newa WebGUI?

Again I congratulate to SUB and others for creating this excellent product!

Regards,

Zdenko

Hi Zdenko,

Yes, it is a bad idea to try to run any video from an RDP session (unless, I believer you have Windows 7 Ultimate which is supposed to handle it better). The problem I have, however, is that the NPVR GUI never loads, and the window itself, not the RDP session, stops responding.

Sub; thanks for your reply. Which log file would you like me to post? I've had a look at the obvious guess, ...\logs\NPVR.log, however the file is very short and doesn't seem to contain anything hinting at my problem. Nevertheless you can find a copy here http://pastebin.com/rKihAa4Q.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,
Jon

I can't see anything obvious in that log. What version of windows are you running?

I've not heard of anyone having problems with it over RDP. If you run "NextPVR.exe -no3d" does it help?

Yes! Sweet. I've never been able to get NextPVR.exe to come up on my laptop when I've got an RDP connection to my server (for settings management). With this command it works. :-)

Thanks Sub, that did the trick for me too.

Sorry to bump a super old thread, but I have been running into this issue trying to use Chrome Remote Desktop on my Windows 10 PC and trying to interact with my nPVR app on my main machine. Most of the time I am doing this from home, I have the PC set up in the garage, and generally just need to RDP in to mess with some settings, but I would love it if I could interact with the GUI, as I prefer the EPG setup from the app instead of the web ui.

I've tried running "NextPVR.exe -no3d" but just get a 'windows cannot find that file' error.

I'm an idiot, and figured it out. The -no3d did work.

For remote access to the GUI (without settings) you should also have a look at nlite.
