I was looking at the XBMC forums at PVR development and ran across this thread:

http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=142994

It linked to another page that has code for patching XBMC to allow for comskip support in the PVR section:

https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/1743

The first thread says that this is only supported by the Mythtv backend. I'm not sure if work is being done on incorporating this into nPVR so I am posting the information here. Comskip support under XBMC would be a wonderful thing!

The NextPVR addon already implements XBMC's GetRecordingEdl() function, which is used for retrieving this comskip info. Unfortunately we've discovered XBMC never calls it for addons that stream via http. ie, the only thing stopping it today is a limitation in XBMC.

Ahh.. okay. Is there any work around for watching recordings with comskip? I'm not able to try at the moment, but can I map my networked recordings directory as a video source and then will the XBMC video player use the comskip cutpoints? Does xbmc use edl or txt comskip files?

Yeah, I think the only work around is mapping a drive, and then use one of the file playback screens in XBMC (rather than playing them as recordings, which stream via http).

You can also play files with comskip from a share using X-NEWA, including Web Client. I do it all the time.

Martin, I tried installing X-NEWA but I got a 'dependencies not met' error. This is on Android with XBMC Gotham.

You probably installed the wiki version. You need the newer one in the Chameleon thread.

Martin

Martin, I installed the Chameleon version. I've tried playing back a recording that has a matching EDL file:

Code:
313.45    463.93    0
737.34    887.95    0
1221.45    1437.54    0

as well as a matching TXT file:

Code:
FILE PROCESSING COMPLETE  47770 FRAMES AT  2997
-------------------
9394    13904
22098    26612
36607    43083
49172    49173

but I am not seeing any comercial skipping during playback. I'm guessing that this should happen automatically? Any advice on what to check? Thanks

You like need to set up advancedsetting.xml so that it runs from a share properly if it isn't running from one now.

Martin, excuse my ignorance. I'm run XNEWA and the only thing I did was configure my server IP address. I'm not certain if I am running from a share or not. I'm guessing that I'm streaming over HTTP? I'll try searching the forums to see if someone has posted a how-to on setting things up using a share.
