Looking at the manual http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?n=Manual.NTray it seems that the "n" icon in the system tray should do something - probably it should have a right-click option to bring up a menu with Status, Start N-PVR, Restart Service. However on my Win 7 PC it does not respond to any actions (left-click, right-click, double-click) although the icon does appear when the PC is rebooted, so it's being auto-started.

Is there something I've done wrong during installation? Is there a log file which would give a reason why the status icon is having no effect?

It would be nice if the icon at least changed colour to a red disc when a recording is being made and then displayed a tooltip confirming the name of the programme being recorded - like Windows Media Centre does. Maybe this is how it is supposed to behave...

Works fine on my install (and has for several versions). As it always has worked on my system, never really noticed if there are log messages or not. A right-click should bring up a context menu with the following options:
  • Show Status
  • Start NPVR
  • Restart Recording Service
  • Exit
If you select show status, it will pop a dialog with each of your tuners and any recordings in progress.
If a recording is in progress, the N on the icon will turn red.

Is your NPVR Recording Service running? The tray icon can do odd things if the recording service isn't running.

Yes it is. It shows up in Control Panel | Admin Tools | Services. Also, I can schedule and record programmes.

Maybe firewall/antivirus software is stopping the tray from communicating with the recording service? This would give the same behaviour as the recording service not running.

I've removed and reinstalled NPVR and that seems to have cured the problem. Unlike with my other bug (the Unhandled Exception when creating simultaneous recordings) it happened without needing to remove the contents of the \users\public\npvr directory.

I upgraded to Windows 10 yesterday, and I am also having issues with the system tray icon. I removed and reinstalled NPVR, and still not working. Services.msc shows NPVR running, but system tray icon show option to "Restart Recording Service". This does nothing, and there is no option to "Stop Recording Service" as there was previously in Windows 7.

I don't have that option on either of my W7 servers. It is available from the start menu though.

I'm certain I had the option to start and stop the recording service from the system tray icon in Windows 7 home premium.
