Wife acceptance factor on NPVR's series recording from live TV is high and may be enough to score a win over Kodi in our ongoing battle to replace our beloved WMC. However, NPVR tends to crash on me multiple times an evening, and the wife acceptance factor for crashing in the middle of her show is very low. I'm very PC savvy, but am not sure how to troubleshoot this. Nothing else crashes. Windows remains stable post-crash. Nothing obvious in the logs (attached), and I can restart NVPR without a problem after a crash. Appreciate advice.

What are you doing when it crashes? Does it give an error message on the screen when it crashes?

Usually watching a live tv stream from my HDHR, although it has happened while viewing a recording. No error message - just back to the Windows desktop. I can just restart NPVR and continue, although it will often happen again after a minute or two.

Sometimes I can get through a whole half hour show. Sometimes not.

Rebooting doesn't seem to make a difference.

Thanks for any ideas.

I suspect it's related to the decoders you're using.

If you create a c:\temp directory, do you get a c:\temp\crash.mdmp created when it crashes?

What decoders are you using?

C:\temp exists, but there is no crash file there (inc. hidden).

Using the default NPVR decoders: EVR, default, default, LAV, Microsoft, disabled, MPEG, and LAV for the rest. I do have CCCP installed. I own PowerDVD and could try Cyberlink if you think it makes sense.

Is there a Windows Event Viewer message about the crash, giving the name of a dump file?

It seems to me you are using LAV for Video decoder, that is known to cause issues. Cyberlink decoder is a very good choice both for MPEG2 and H.264.

Just crashed again - we had been watching live TV all evening, several channels, even did a recording on demand. This crash came a second after I switched channels. Couple of entries in the Applications log, but I don't get any clues. Thanks for looking.

I installed a registered copy of PowerDVD 12 - no issues - but I don't see any new decoders available in NPVR. WHat did I miss? Thanks.
