My mother board only has 2 PCIe slots ---- a single PCIe x16 Gen 2.0 slot (usually used for graphics cards ---- I do not, as I use the on-board graphics the few times I hook a monitor up --- the Box is solely used for streaming, therefore, have no need to hook a monitor up)

And the motherboard has a single PCIe X1 slot.

Now, I have 2 identical Avermedia M791-B's (both PCIe x1) and they both function fine --- however, I use both the slots for my cards --- both the PCIe x16 and the PCIe x1. However, no matter which card I put in that PCIe x16 slot, the output is broken, pixelated, ext ext.

Shouldn't a PCIe x1 card work in all the various PCIe configurations ? PCIe x1, 4, 8 and 16 ?

Is there a setting in the BIOS I have incorrect (irq (interrupt) off, perhaps) ? Is the on-board graphics perhaps interfering with the PCIe x16 (graphics) slot ? I do not see an option of shutting off the on-board video....I DO see a setting in which it prioritizes a given graphics option at startup, but no way to shut off the on-board video output.

So, what might be wrong here ?

Yes, should do. I use a tuer in a PCIe x16 slot.

Any special configuration in BIOS. given this normally a graphic card slot ?

ie : "Init Display First", "Allocate IRQ to PCI VGA", ect ect ?

It should work, my x1 HVR-2250 is in my x16 slot. But I have definitely read of cases where the bios or mainboard treats the x16 slot somehow special and non-graphics cards may not work correctly (which certainly flies in the face of how PCIe is supposed to work!). I'd try updating your BIOS. I don't know of any specific BIOS setting that would affect this. (as sub said below, I didn't change anything either, it just worked)

I can't reboot to check right now, but I didn't change anything. I just plugged it in and it worked fine.

You won't be surprised to learn that you are not the first to have problems ... not that it helps you to read other people's long and sad stories ... http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...post486028

yea. I tried every single BIOS configuration --- one at a time, and then in different configurations -I could think of as it pertains to that graphic card slot ---- no dice.

I wanted to avoid doing so, but I guess I may put the spare card in my desktop computer, install NextPVR and operate it as a client --- wanted to avoid doing so, because -- unlike my streaming server, I don't run my desktop 24/7...... but I hate to waste the card Smile

Thanks everyone --- for the kind help

I have an Asus Z97-A, and was mislead by the specs... It stated that PCIe lanes were shared between the M.2 slot and 2 PCIe x1 slots. In their mind, "shared" means: either it is one, or it is the other; if I had known that I would have opted a mainboard with a different slot layout.

Anyway, perhaps there is something similar going on in your case: if some onboard device is enabled, it conflicts with a slot? (not so likely if the mainboard has just 2 slots, but always a possibility). Can you perhaps post the model of the mainboard? (perhaps someone else finds something in the manual Smile)

V_J ---

I have an 'el cheapo' and rather dated ECS A880GM-M7 motherboard with an AMD 820 4-core CPU onboard running as my streaming server. The motherboard has 2 PCI, 1 PCIe x1, and 1 PCIe x16 slots on-board.

http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Product...19&LanID=0

As for the other stuff, I have no clue what you mean --- the 'shared PCI lanes" and the "shared IRQ lines" have always slightly confused me Sad

What can you tell me about this board that might explain my issues ?

the 880g northbridge has 22 PCIe lanes (plus 4 dedicated for communication with the southbridge), so it's not going to be an issue of shared PCIe lanes on that motherboard which is only using 17 for the PCIe slots (other onboard devices like the ethernet controller. aren't going to use more than 1 or 2 of the remaining lanes).

it's also not likely to be an issue of the on-board graphics somehow interfering with the x16 slot, as they're in the northbridge itself. the board has support for AMD hybrid graphics, which means both an add-in graphics card and the on-board graphics must operate at the same time.

it's likely going to come down to one of two things - the BIOS doing something different with the configuration of that set of PCIe lanes, or the Avermedia tuner driver not handling something correctly for being in that slot. It shouldn't be an issue, but sometimes it is. If you've updated to the 6/23/10 bios from ECS and installed the latest driver from Avermedia, you've likely done all that you can do.
