I am currently using NPVR to record from a satellite. I am thinking of cutting the cord and going with Charter's new streaming service for internet-only customers which runs off of a Roku box (although I think you can run it off PC too)

I would like to continue to be able to record the TV shows. Playback off HTPC is fine as it is hookup anyway.

Can I do this?

My questions:
1. How do I select the channel/stream to record? I have not used Roku but I assume it is interactive stream selection which will not mesh with the IRblaster sending out a channel number like I have now.
2. Any concerns with copy protected HDMI signal from Roku to PC tuner card?

(I did search forums and found stuff on using Roku to access the NPVR server but that is not what I want. I want DVR of the liveTV streams (US networks mostly but I don't have good antennae option)

I don't think NextPVR will be usable in this type of setup.

Not sure. Maybe I need to try it out and see; the concern is whether you are considered a cable customer by ESPN/ABC etc.

The Roku has voice commands so I am wondering with Windows TTS if that could be an option? Not sure of suggestions to try back to NPVR?

The only service that I know of that does what you're looking for is PlayOn. I have not personally used it for this (I played around with the free version of PlayOn years ago), but they do advertise a service that 'records' streamed media. I am not sure about it working with a Roku, however.

I use PlayOn with my Roku as part of my entertainment setup (i.e., there is a PlayOn channel for Roku, but PlayOn runs on a PC - the Roku and its "channel" is a client). In order to easily record the stream via PlayOn the source needs to have a PlayOn channel - there are quite a few including NetFlix, Hulu, major networks, etc. Additionally you can subscribe to new streams and PlayOn will record them automatically when they come available. If you get the PlayOn Plus version it will also automatically skip commercials on playback. I know some people have had problems with PlayOn but I find it very reliable. It and the Roku are a great complement to my NPVR set-up.

Most likely you will record your shows through Charter in the Cloud then use the apps they provide to view them on your TV's, tablets, etc.

As far a recording a permanent copy for your pleasure and use in the future, you will probably have to analog record those shows as you watch them if your tuner has RCA inputs through an adapter.

I have several Roku's and they all have RCA adapter cords out. Some don't.

Welcome to Spectrum. (TWC/Charter's offspring).

You'll need an HDMI stripper between the PC tuner card and the Roku, but, yes, you can record programming from the Roku.
