hi, i am using kodi on my rpis.i am doing a project for hotel to save cost of cable.i am trying to do that i will buy one tv tunner card and attach it from my setupbox to my laptop that will act as server and in my hotel rooms i will send tv channels from this pc as my backend and various rpis as clients.

Will they be able to watch tv without any problem with each other in any way...????

i had read one of the link

This won't work technically ... plus you will need to send a forum private message to Sub to ask about a commercial license for NextPVR.

The set top box (STB) does not know that it is connected to a computer and thinks it is connected to a television. The STB knows that a TV can only display one channel at a time so the STB only send one channel at a time to the "tuner" in the computer.

If you are using digital tuners to receive broadcasts without a STB (via, for example, a roof top aerial), you can receive one or more channels per tuner at the same time. It would then be possible for multiple rpis to each receive a different channel from a NextPVR server at the same time.

That old thread is obsolete because you can watch one channel from an STB on analog tuners on multiple clients but the license concern will definitely need to get resolved with sub

He'd PM me the same question, so I've replied to him about the license issue.

receiving signal from roof top means using dish service or it means using own anteana. in India channels are encrypted and digitalised.

does this mean instead of connecting my cable wire to setup box and then via tuner to my laptop i shall connect my cable wire to these above mention tuners and than to my laptop, will it work in this way ???
or you are saying that i shall use some antenna to receive signals but how will provide signal to that antenna ?? or you are saying that instead of using cable wire i shall use some dish service

in india cable is encrypted and we cannot watch tv without setup boxses

There are usually about three ways to receive TV ... Satellite TV via a dish, Cable TV via a cable or terrestrial broadcast via a rooftop antenna (which is different to a dish). Each of these three can be broadcast both with and without encryption.

I do not know what is available in India.

In the UK, satellite TV is available as a paid-for service that is encrypted and requires a STB ... and as a free service that is not encrypted and can be received using a satellite tuner device in a PC that is directly connected to the satellite dish.

In the US, some cable TV is (or used to be) available as an un-encrypted service so that the cable feed could be connected directly to a tuner in a PC. Other cable TV services are encrypted and require a STB.

In the UK, terrestrial TV is broadcast un-encrypted and received by rooftop antennas that can be connected directly to a tuner device in a PC.

You need to decide which method has the channels that you require. If you can get all of the channels that you require from an rooftop antenna (not a dish) ... you may be able to do something with a TV server on a computer ... but it would be easier to put a TV in every room and connect each TV to the antenna.

If the TV channels that you require can only be received via a STB ... you can only receive one channel at a time from a STB.
