Recording Service Stops

Just installed NPVR 3.9.2.161119 but cannot get it to show live TV. I downloaded EPG, Setup the TV adaptor, installed SAF 6.32. Main screen shows EPG list but when I tried to view a channel the recording service stops and I get message "unable to communicate with recording service". Event viewer shows nrecord.exe stops with Faulting module name: DivX.dll. Same with NDigitalHost.exe, same dll. Yet I can run the recording service with a command line window using "cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\NPVR" & nrecord.exe RUN" and it all works well. But I have to keep the command line window open with nrecord running. If I close this window NextPVR hangs.
The divx.dll module referenced in Event Viewer was not in system32 as the viewer claimed it was so I downloaded one from http://www.dlldump.com but it made no difference. I have now reinstalled NextPVR 4 times.
Any ideas?

NextPVR doesn't use divx.dll sounds like your DirectShow decoders are messed up.

I'd find where divx.dll is on your machine, and unregister it. (or uninstall whatever software has added it to your machine)

If the DirectShow decoders are messed up how do I "unmess" them? How should I go about diagnosing the decoders?

What have you installed that might have installed decoders? It may be a codec pack or a media player. It may have been installed weeks or months ago. Something that was installed includes some kind of "divx" support. One option might be to uninstall all codec packs or media players and re-instyall only the ones that you need and install them one by one so that if the problem come back it will be obvious what caused it.

Thanks. I'll go thru Programs and Features and remove all video related software including NextPVR. Then just install NextPVR and see if that works. I'll be back!

The k-lite code pack I use does have a repair function.

You could start a command prompt with 'run as administrator', and run:

regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DivX.dll

Thanks but as I said there is no divx.dll in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DivX.dll! Anyway I seem to have solved the problem.
I uninstalled all video related apps except Nero as that is rather large with uopdates to have to re-install. After all uninstalls no difference.
I then did a search on registry for divx.dll and found several references (like Kwikmedia) so uninstalled them. Still no difference.
I then explored codecs and though I had installed SAF 6.32 I then installed ffdshow tryout. Still no change.
And still getting message in Event Viewer that divx.dll is causing the problem.
With a flash of inspiration I ran autoruns and looked at the codecs list. There were several I didn't recognise, including vidc.vidx, vidc.xvid, and others. I disabled all the vidc entries (except vidc.ffds as added by ffdshow).
Walla, I have a working system.
Curiously I found there is a divx.dll in sysWOW64 and not in system32! Also divxdec.ax whatever that is.
Thanks for your help guys.

ps how to I remove/uninstall codecs?

It's possible the Windows is hiding the fact it was in syswow64, since it's a 32bit process on 64bit windows, so it might have infact been in this other directory. What is certain however, is that was running code inside DivX.dll (version: 5.0.5.830) when it crashed.

This type of problem can happen when a decoder is buggy, but too enthusiastically tells the system to use it. ie, it can tell the system something like "use me for anything MPEG2 related" etc, and ends up crashing when it gets something it doesn't like. Nice decoders instead tell the system "only use me if you're explicitly told to".

It sounds like you've go it sorted now, so all good.

Generally you'd uninstall the application that installed the codec. If you can't find which app it is, you can run the "regsvr32 /u" command I mentioned above with the path to the codec you're trying to uninstall.
