hi all, and again thanks NPVR for a great product. I record all of my digital tv and have done for must be 7 years now. sometimes during that period i have had to change PC's etc. Inoted that i get artefacts on playback but when i slect an SSD drive (External) i get perfect pictures. I record everything to an external drive as my pc's never have the capacity. But thats beside the point as i think i have shown that SSD'd work much better compared to External HDD's. My new PC is solid state now and when i had an SSD connected it was perfect. But i just used that drive for something else. So ois there a way to tweak performance to work well on an external HDD ? As i think i have proven if you have a PC that is totally solid state and record to an external SSD the recordings will be perfect. But the cost will be about $450 to buy another external SSD with the 2 TB capacity i require. Anyway of teaking any settings?

I've not heard of anyone having that problem. You should be fine recording to an external HDD, you don't need an ssd. However, given you description, you might want to take a closer look at the performance of the drive or enclosure you're using - it might be really slow and need an upgrade, or the drive might be having some issue.

Thanks sub. I'm sure i hve had thios issue before with other HDD's, but definately seems better using SSD and that is everything SSD. It is using the same arial as the tv which has never had artefact issues.

Artifacts are usually related to reception issues, so I'd suggest taking a closer look (ie, test the same channel etc)

I would agree that you shouldn't need an SSD for recordings. Are you doing multiple recordings at the same time and/or doing comskip on them at the same time as the recordings?

Also, look at how you are connecting the external drive. An old USB 2.0 drive vs. a USB 3 drive could make a difference.

I actually have experienced this as well. I wrote about it here. I, too, used to record to my external drive but found the playback very pixelated. I installed a dedicated SSD and my problems went away.

External HDD's work fine, provided they are connected via USB 3.0 (the blue connectors). Make sure you are not using the old 2.0 standard, which is MUCH slower.

I'm currently connected using USB 3. I think it is a fact that SSD's work much better and actually make sense because their reading and writting is lightning faster

Hold the phone, a bit of an update. The external drive was connected to a usb 2 port. I connected it to the USB 3 port aND VERY EARLY INDICATIONS ARE THAT there are no artefacts. I will thouroughly test tonight and update.
