Am I missing a setting?  Seems like if I don't use the npvr overnight I have to restart the service.  Otherwise, when I click on a channel to watch Kodi displays the channel name for a few seconds then goes back to idling, sometimes the "failure to play" error pops up.

Restarting the service corrects it.  The server is set to never sleep.  Both tuners are affected.Ubuntu 19.04.

Do you leave Kodi running too or do you restart it? We'd probably need to nee debug client logs to see it working ok.

For the tuner you'd probably need to check journalctl to see if something funny is shown in the logs.

I leave the RPi running usually, got a new 4 the other day so I've been rebooting frequently.
The only mention of NextPVR in journalctl -r is when it started at last boot.

on the pi4 nothing happens
on the web interface on PC "starting device" then nothing
systemctl says it is running
restart NextPVR-Server everything is OK.

last activity was watching NFL Sunday afternoon on Pi4.
This happens whether keep digital tuners primed is checked or not

Really! This is happening on a linux machine. one tuner is HVR-1250 PCI-e the other is HVR-1600 PCI. They both stop working after some idle time. Restarting nextpvr-server fixes it.

Can the PCI bus go to sleep independent of the rest of the computer?

Anybody? I know this is not a problem with nextpvr or Kodi. it is either ubuntu or the computer, but maybe there is a setting in npvr I'm missing.

Sorry on my debian system I don't have issues with my PCI or USB devices going to sleep.

I am aware of an issue where the Linux dvb/atsc devices aren't shutting down cleanly after user. It's on my list to look into.

Cool! For some reason it is both tuners go useless after no use for a time. It is a old Dell GX-280 computer, that might be a problem (new mother board).

FWIW; I disabled NPVR 5 and installed TVheadend. In TVheadend the tuners stay on. So I guess it is something in NPVR that is the problem.

It could be related to the socket to the devices dying if the network goes to sleep and the bug with DeviceHostLinux If you don't use your tuner does it work after sleep?

I have everything I can find set to never sleep/hibernate/conserve energy.
I'm not sure if npvr sees the tuners, I think it does.
Seems to be a certain number of hours, not use then idle. I can go back and use them after a short idle.
