I'll try to find it but if I remember correctly it wasn't so much an official request but a "how do I do this" and then a "you can't its hard coded now". Think it was previously possible in much earlier versions but then they hard coded it.

I'm just the opposite. Have no idea why you want to see recent recordings vs what was done first. SeasonEpisode is preferred for me but it's not an option so Date Ascending gets closest in my opinion. It's not failproof but good enough. It's kind of like the comment sections on most websites default to newest first. Not sure why anyone likes that but to each their own.

I am really not interested in shows or movies that I keep around for years so the root level should be descending. I do like to check that new recordings were successful since I might not watch them for months and I want to catch them while I can.

Didn't understand what they were referencing as I'm not familiar with kodi advanced settings editing.

One post says its possible but then a developer seems to correct the poster. Didn't quite understand what he meant.

I found that thread earlier that is where they changed it to descending.

I'll submit a PR and see what Kodi Team will say if anything. I don't see anything in that thread about advanced settings but that is how I will start and if they want a GUI I will add one..
