I'm thinking of using this utility since I can't seem to get the built-in transcoder working. The built in transcoder ends up makinga 14 kb wmv file. I can't run it from the command line either. So it looks like I'm SOL for now.

Luckily Sub has an option for maximum number of shows so I just record on low quality and limit the number of shows.

lilyoda Smile .. i am still on 093xx build.. so still using mencoder.

because i've got my batch scripts now automating most of my archiving work (eg, cutting, compressing), i expect to continue using mencoder.. unless i feel like fiddling with my setup for some reason.. Big Grin

Same here, I'm staying in 0.93 for now, until I can isolate or reproduce the bugs I have with 0.94 train and send to sub.
Can someone compare scripts with me? I'm using
Code:
@set Bitrate=1600
start /LOW /WAIT mencoder %1 -force-avi-aspect 4/3 -oac mp3lame -lameopts preset=standard -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=1:bitrate=%Bitrate%:aspect=4/3 -vf scale=352:480:0,eq2=1.0:1.0:0.03:1.0 -sws 2 -o "%~dpn1.avi" -aspect 4/3
start /LOW /WAIT mencoder %1 -force-avi-aspect 4/3 -oac mp3lame -lameopts preset=standard -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=2:bitrate=%Bitrate%:aspect=4/3 -vf scale=352:480:0,eq2=1.0:1.0:0.03:1.0 -sws 2 -o "%~dpn1.avi" -aspect 4/3
But for some reason, the endfile has a bleh quality, and usually ends around only 30% gain of space. Also, despite setting the aspect to 4/3 in 3 different parameters, it's not recoded in the AVI... So when I try to open the AVI in media player (classic) it shows up with a wrong aspect ratio.

Any suggestion? Post your configs Smile

LilYoda,

How long does it take for the two pass transcode? Does this interfere with comskip when you put it into postprocessing.bat?

As for your aspect ratio...I find that some players don't seem to know aspect ratio. I use zoom player and it seems to be able to figure it out by letting it autodetect. The same file when played in GBPVR doesn't play in the right aspect ratio. As a result, I watch watch avi movies using an external player.

The 2 pass transcode is fairly long. Takes about the same time as the show itself. Doesn't interfere with anything else, since I start it with low priority.
I'm still playing around with the settings. I'm a newbie with Xvid, I've always used divx, but for some reason I could n't create decent divx files with mencoder...

As a side note, encoding to 352*480 plays resized fine on the MVP (whereas it's not supposed to, according to the Hauppauge docs), but has weird playback problems. I think it's due to the resizing creating weird combos with the interlacing. When you have lateral movements, it looks like the moving objects are stuttering back and forth in their movement.
Problem disappears when resizing to 352*240 or 640*480, where the MVP doesn't resize.

hey lilyoda... as promised Smile my commandline paramaters:

mencoder.exe "source.mpg" -oac mp3lame -lameopts mode=2:cbr:br=128 -sws 2 -zoom -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:vbitrate=900 -ffourcc DIVX -o "destination.avi"

The output that i get is probably not that great.. but good enuff for me Big Grin

hope it helps..
