It would be very, very nice if it would be possible to capture DV footage through a plugin and let the hardware mpeg encoder on my wintv-pvr150 convert it to mpeg2.

I am looking for a solution like this because i want to transfer my old video8 tapes to my computer and use my dv camera for streaming it to my computer through firewire. I guess the best way would be to let the hardware mpeg2 encoder on my wintv board do the job (if that is at all possible).

I don't think my programming skills will be sufficient to achieve something like this, but you can all count on my help if needed.

Plug the cam into the S-video or composite inputs, and cap that way instead.
I suppose it's possible to output from the video card, the already captured DV, and input that to the PVR card, but that's double the time.
You can never have enough tuners!

I tried that, but somehow the wintv doesn't like my old samsung videocam very much. I get on both composite and s-video(with a converter plug), strange bars and shaky video. This was, by the way, not the case with my previous capturing method, which was through a break out box on my vivo GeForce FX5600.
The quality however, was very poor and the capturing and converting time consuming.

It is possible to record my video8 footage to dv first, and then use the av out on the dv-cam to the s-video in of the wintv, but the streaming capabilities of my dv cam would save me a lot of time (half the time).

Why WinTV?
Have you tried using gbpvr to cap it?

How would I do this?

I, like the original author, would like to send the output of my videocam (via s-video connection) into my PVR150 and let it make the mpeg file. It is not obvious to me, however, how to do that. Do I need to "schedule" a recording and start to output my videocam at that time? Or, can I start to record immediately somehow (my preferred way)?

Thanks.

Personally I would just use a DV card to ransfer the digital video.
Yes it's an mpeg1 file & gigantic but then you can edit it & convert it to mpeg 2 or 4 at a higher quality than through s-video on a pvr-150.

however, you can set up an s-video channel & schedule a recording to start one step earlier than the actual time & to end when however long the video is.
When you do that it will start recording immediatly.
I also think you can go to your created s-video channel & just press record.
I think it does a timed recording for one hr.

Thanks for the reply. My editing and encoding is done on another machine. I'm looking for a quick way to get to MPEG2 for those "less than critical and don't need to be edited" recordings. I thought the PVR150 encoding quality was supposed to be quite good?
