well i've been bouncing between gbpvr and media portal and as soon as i got media portal set up correctly (or so i thought!) it started recording files in dvr-ms format and the resolution was way off spec...hmm so back to gbpvr and the new version. The stuttering audio/video seems to be gone! That was the main thing holding me back in gbpvr..i now have a couple questions:

1) Is it possible to turn offtimeshifting? I don't really want it filling up my drives with buffered information as i really just use the program as a dvr to record certain shows at certain times.

2) Do the programs queue'd up for recording still record if just the GB-PVR service is running? Or do I have to have GB-PVR up and running as well?

thanks

If you have live preview enabled in the config app, then no files are written to disk when watching TV.

Yes, the recordings are done by the recording service which is always running in the background

Can I tag onto this too...I am also just learning how this works....
- it looks like I have live buffer enabled and set to my C:\ , but i have watched TV and see no file there. Does gbpvr erase the file when you stop watching? I too would probably turn it off....
- I used Hauppage WinTV to record previously and I always thought it took too much CPU to run.....I assume because I always displayed the video and captured at the same time (thus running the decoder in software and using my CPU). I like yours much better since I mostly use as a DVR :-)
Good work!
- Just another atta boy - I am loving the fact that I can tack a few minutes at the beginning and end of shows; I constantly had to go and adjust the Hauppauge times otherwise I was likely to miss beginnings and ends

GB-PVR has two modes for watching live tv. Live Preview mode which creates no files, and times shift mode which creates temporary files (and auto deletes them when they're no longer required).

I noticed with my MVP player, it is creating all kinds of files on my disk. I assume its buffering encoded data, but it seems to be doing it on a per channel basis, or per show.....
There are also some config settings: pre play 0.5 sec and transcode delay 5.5sec, looks like default
- where do I set up how much space you get to use for these files? I would like to minimize since "I" dont need them
- whats the diff between preplay and transcode delay. I do notice switching channels it takes a few seconds to lock in, so to speak.

Thanks

Ah, MVP...

The MVP is always in timeshift mode, so yes, it'll be creating files.

The MVP is designed as video file player. GB-PVR is only able to trick the MVP into showing live TV by making it play video files as they are still recording.

GB-PVR does it based on the shows listed in you TV Guide. It records a file for each show. If you're watching a short show, it'll create a small temporary file. If you're watching a long show, it'll create a big temporary file. At the end of the file there can be a one second long pause as the MVP is told to play a new file.

The preplay delay is used to let the recording position get slightly ahead of the playback position. The MVP insist on holding a couple of seconds of buffered video before it'll start playback. If you make the live tv pre-play delay too small, there is a chance the MVP will think its reach the end of the file before it ever really gets started playing it.

Transcode delay performs a similar functions, but its for when you play AVI/WMV/DVR-MS file.
