I've recently upgraded from and AiW 7500 to Powercolor's 550 and Saphire's 9800 Pro. As a somewhat computer litterate person (build all my own and others) I thought I'd be able to overcome apparent almost universal dislike for the software inccl /w the 550. I stand humbled as most things I took for granted with 7500 aren't even thought of here.
My biggest dillema is that this computer is mainly used as a glorified tv for my Deaf wife whilst she is on her computer. As a deaf person tv is useless without CC. I've scoured many boards and tv programs for info on CC and have come up with very little. I like the teamwork and cooperation I've seen so far with gbpvr and the simplicity of it make it appealing. I can't wait to try some of the plugins when I'm ready for recordings.

My question is Will/is Closed Captioning available?

Apologies if discussed elsewhere.

If your card supports capturing closed captioning then it is there when the video is recorded. You can try this program to see if it extracts it - http://pages.sbcglobal.net/i.coggins/mpg2srt/index.html

Thanks Linfor, but using Ati Theater 550 and most interested in CC while watching tv as opposed to the recordings, tho would be nice.

I dont think you'll be able to get CC to work with this device. Sorry.

Wow, Just [Edit] Wow!
Without too much effort could you tell me why?
And what card would you recommend that is compatable ie: Hardware mpeg and as good a pic (with CC of course)? Probably a Hauppage from what I can gather from your boards. Tiz a shame that something like no CC makes it worthless for me. So much for research.

The Hauppauge PVR250/350 cards are capable of including the CC information in the MPEG2 files it captures. The newer PVR150/500 are not. I'm not sure with the ATI 550, but I dont think so.

Even with the PVR250/350, this CC information can only be viewed when playing back recording you made earlier. It cant be used for live tv.

Please note, I'm not in a country that has CC included in our broadcasts, so its not something I test or develop for.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Guess I'll have to do some more searching. Really trying to avoid going to the AiW9800 Pro as I hear it's got trouble with overheating and of course comskip and deinterlacing won't be possible... Eh, back to the drawing boards.
Thanks anywhoo

If you were in a country that uses Teletext subtitles, you'd fair better. In this case you'll be able to capture SRT subtitles files along with your recordings, and you'd also be able view subtitles while watching live tv, even with cards like the PVR150, ATI 550 pro etc. Sorry, I know this doesnt really help you.

ATI's site says that the 550 Pro has "Closed captioning and Teletext support". But it will still not work? Does anyone have a 550 Pro based card who can test this?

If not, does that mean that the only cards supported by GB-PVR that do closed captions are the PVR-250 and 350?

well, as closed caption is apparently very important to you, try using the bundled software that came with your 550, chances are it supports CC. Perhaps GB-PVR is not for you?
