client side WOL & DB off-line message handling
Posted by: 2leftfeet - 2015-08-06, 04:52 PM - Forum: Wishlist - Replies (2)

I am running a client/server configuration where I put the server to sleep if not in use. Currently, I use a script (which works), that wakes the server via magic packet, enters a polling loop until the server DB wakes, and then starts NPVR on the client. Although the process works, it takes a while for the script to execute and start NPVR. I am wondering if this process could be sped up by having NPVR, in client mode, automatically send a magic packet to the server, go into a wait state until the server wakes and the DB is available, then enter the desired NPVR mode?

If the client tries to access the server's database when server is off-line, a "Server database not found" message appears. Clicking the "OK" button clears that message only to be replaced by "unhandled exception" message, displaying a "continue" button. Pressing the continue button only brings back the unhandled exception message again and on and on - in an infinite loop. Only killing the nextpvr task in task manager seems to rid this message. Not very user-friendly, IMO.

The above suggestion would eliminate the infinite loop and hopefully start NPVR on client side much faster.

Live Tv and audio in W10
Posted by: sister5091 - 2015-08-06, 01:38 PM - Forum: Legacy (v4.x and earlier) - Replies (9)

Hi everyone. I Have upgraded to W10 from W7, but the application NextPvr does not have audio or live tv functions. In W7 it worked great. Will it work in W10? deanie44

Newbie - Understanding the Recording Process
Posted by: daveslee - 2015-08-06, 12:20 PM - Forum: Legacy (v4.x and earlier) - Replies (11)

Hi Everyone,

First off, thanks to the community for Next PVR and Kodi providing a replacement for Windows Media Centre now that I've gone to Windows 10. My wife makes heavy use of Windows Media Centre so I need to thrash out the bugs in the Next PVR/Kodi system so that this all becomes "wife-friendly".

All that follows is for:

NextPVR: 3.4.8

NextPVR add-ons and utilities: TV Listings, TV Recordings (could live without these); XmktvExtras.exe, XmlTvGUI (scraping from Radio times)

TV Tuners: Hauppauge WinTV MOD7700 DVB-T dual tuner; PCTV single tuner recognised as Hauppauge MSi2500 all taking a very weak signal from UK, Northumberland, Pontop Pike with significant amplification and distribution sometimes resulting in poor signal (which we have to accept living in a rural area).

Kodi: "Isengard" 15.0 Git:20150721

Kodi add-ons (other than default): MCEREmote, NextPVR PVR Client, XEM

I've read the first 20 pages of so of the Forum, checked out the FAQs and the Wiki, but I'm still cluless on what follows. Apologies if this has been asked a million times before - in which case point me at the forum posts that I can't find (even with search).

===

Setting recordings/timers.

Kodi seems to provide all of the interface that we want with the exception that "series link" type functionality seems a bit hit and miss. The record request for the "base" program seems to go back to NextPVR from Kodi quite quickly and reliably, but the "linked" recordings necessary seem hit and miss. Sometimes they appear instantly, sometimes they appear after delay and sometimes never (if you see what I mean). Setting the recordings directly in NextPVR through "TV Guide" always works; sometimes the add-in "TV Listings" doesn't behave as I'd expect (a bit like setting timers through Kodi).

Can anyone explain or point me at the wiki/forum articles that explain how the recordings database works so I can understand what (if anything) is going wrong. If all else fails, I'll just keep using NextPVR "TV Guide" only to set recordings.

Noisy Recordings

We seem to suffer from two types of noise in the .ts files that are recorded (any the WTV and dvr-me files that various Media Centre editions have provided):

(i) "Shot noise" from passing traffic, tree movements etcetera. This produces mpeg blocking (as expected - on our dedicated TV sets too) and is sometimes so severe that it upsets software playback of the transmission streams.

(ii) Startup noise: Whenever the tuners start-up or change channel they seem to take some time to lock and quite often there are errors in the first few frames of mpeg video that upset some software decoders.

I'm using the LAV decoders and they seem more susceptible to damaged .ts than other decoders. For a give damaged .ts file, LAV decoders perform worst, then the internal decoders in VLC media player. Best performing are the decoders for .ts inside my WD-Live stand-alone players.

Not really understanding the way that NextPVR makes recordings then makes them available to e.g. Kodi, I tried to insert ProjectX in the "signal chain". Running those dodgy .ts files through a stand-alone compled version of ProjectX 0.91.0.10 set to demux. drop all except valid video and audio and remux to a .ts cures the crashing of the LAV and VideoLAN converters and makes the skip forward/back on the WDLive boxes of these files a bit more reliable.

But I'm obviously doing this wrong. I looped ProjectX in using a "PostProcessing.bat" script which acts on the original .ts file passed as %1 into the script. ProjectX gives a file with [remux] added into the filename, so I rename the original .ts to .bak and rename the new ts to remove the [remux].

Somehow though, NextPVR notices that I fiddle with the .TS file. Timekeeping in playback is hosed in NextPVR and likewise in Kodi->TV->Recordings. Curiously, the file plays as expected if I go Kodi->TV Shows->(e.g.) Recently Added then all is well. I guess I don't understand the way files are processed in NextPVR and I'm "intercepting" at the wrong stage. What is causing NextPVR to not just play the new (remixed) .ts file - what is instructing it to do something different?

Can anyone explain or point me at a description of how recordings are made so I can fix this for myself?

In the meantime, I'll manually run ProjectX over any skipping/crashing .ts files, but this is not "wife friendly"...

Thanks in advance everyone.

HDHR 0-byte file - Clean Win10 OS, Clean NextPVR install
Posted by: JavaWiz - 2015-08-06, 04:35 AM - Forum: Legacy (v4.x and earlier) - Replies (14)

After having great success at upgrading from Win8.1 to Win10 with basically no problems with NextPVR, I decided to acquire a new SSD and do a clean install of Windows 10. I've been able to get the Analog tuner (HVR-2250 working with my XFinity STB), however am having problems with my Silicon Dust HD HomeRun Prime.

I have not done a clean install of OS and NextPVR in awhile, so I suspect I'm missing some step somewhere, but after troubleshooting and scanning wiki and forum have not discovered what is wrong...

Problem:
When tuned to a HDHR channel, NextPVR creates 0-byte files. This is true for LiveTV and Recordings. Experience is a blank screen with no video. However the file gets created in the LiveTV (or Recordings) directory.

Configuration steps:

  • Clean Install of Windows 10
  • Install of most current HDHR drivers and applications
  • Install of NextPVR (3.4.8)
  • Install of SoftPVR (HVR-2250 Drivers for Analog connection)
  • Install of IRBlaster software (from Win-TV install)
  • Install of K-Lite Codec Pack (i.e. LAV Decoder for mpg2 video)
  • Install of AC3 Codec (i.e. Audio decoder)
  • Setup of Analog device successful
  • Setup/Configure of Tuner0 of HDHR successful (253 channels identified)

I have not mapped to my SchedulesDirect listings yet, so TV guide is not populated with data, but channels for both HVR-2250 and HDHR show up.

Behavior:
  • Analog channels for LiveTV and Recordings work fine. Channel changes work
  • When tuning to HDHR channel, black screen, no video, no audio, no apparent errors in log files.
  • Check HDHR web interface, HDHR is tuning on channel with excellent signal strength, and changing channels when requested.

Triage:
  • Verified that Firewall was open for NDigitalHost, NextPVR and NRecord (Inbound rules)
  • Verified that HDHR is available and works on target system via HDHomeRun View Application
  • Reviewed log files to look for any errors
  • Attached logs show an example of HDHR problem and successful HVR-2250 for the same channel
    • First channel selection is HDHR - results in zero-byte file and blank video/audio
    • Second channel selection is 2250 - results in proper LiveTV

I don't believe this is just a codec problem, due to the 0-byte files for HDHR, but regular files when tuning thru the HVR-2250. I should also note, when I did the initial upgrade to Win10, with an exiting install of 3.4.8, all worked fine....

What am I missing????

Newbie New Install - Live TV does not work.
Posted by: djsykora - 2015-08-06, 04:35 AM - Forum: Legacy (v4.x and earlier) - Replies (6)

I installed NextPVR and went through the settings. Connected to my TV tuner card Hauppauge WINTV HVR-1250 (Model 79xxx, Hybrid ATSC/QAM). Scanned for channels and it found about 51.

Tryed Live TV, but nothing played. Tried several channels. No luck.

Scanned through the log file (NPRV.log) but couldn't see any clues that I could figure out what the problems was.

Uninstalled the program and reinstalled it to see if that would help. No luck.

In settings - Decoders - I tried each of the Video Renderers (6 of them). No luck.

In settings - Decoders - I tried all the Video Decoders in the H.264 Video drop down list. No luck.

In settings - decoders - MPeg2 Video the only option was Disabled.
In settings - HEVC Video - the only option is Disabled.

The audio works at times, but cuts out after a minute or so after starting the program.
The video has never worked so far.

The last time I ran NextPVR it played the audio for a minute or so then cut out. THen I closed the program.

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center - 64 bit version (all updates are current) on a Desktop computer.
4 GBytes of Ram
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 2.40GHz
Disk has 25Gbytes of free space.
Video Card - Intel G33/G31 Express Chip Set Family.
Monitor - Dell

Windows Media Center Works with the TV tuner card. Never had problems with it.

I need to get NextPVR working so I can us it instead of Windows Media Center when I upgrade to Windows 10.

Attached are the zipped log files.

Thanks in advance for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

  VIdeo playback from plugin
Posted by: mvallevand - 2015-08-06, 01:49 AM - Forum: Developers - Replies (5)

In response to a thread I read today I was trying to play a stream from my HDHR using UPnp and it works great until NextPVR wants to display the timeline.

Here is the error on the timeline

Code:
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
   at NextPVR.Players.BasePlayer.UpdateTimeline()
   at NextPVR.Players.BasePlayer.RefeshOSD()
   at NextPVR.Players.VideoPlayer.RefeshOSD()
   at NextPVR.ControllerForm.timer1_Tick(Object sender, EventArgs e)
   at System.Windows.Forms.Timer.OnTick(EventArgs e)
   at System.Windows.Forms.Timer.TimerNativeWindow.WndProc(Message& m)
at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.Callback(IntPtr hWnd, Int32 msg, IntPtr wparam, IntPtr lparam)

I've narrowed it down to SetPlayerMetaData and args["STREAM_DURATION"] is required. What should that be for a growing file?

  Encrypted Channels
Posted by: KarterJK - 2015-08-05, 02:18 PM - Forum: Wishlist - Replies (12)

viewing Encrypted Channels is my wish.

With the demise of Windows Media Center on Win10, NextPVR for me is the only true clear cut runner up. It works great, except for those encrypted channels. I use the HD HomeRun Primes and even though they allow viewing encrypted channels they won't display in NextPVR which I don't completely understand why not. What would be needed to get certification?

If NextPVR could provide that, it would be the King of LiveTV.
