I have an mpeg 2 ts file that was made from 720i hdtv that I'd like to convert to an xvid file (or mkv, but would prefer xvid).
It looks good and all, but it's only 20 minutes of video and is 2.5gig so I'd like to crunch it down to something a bit more reasonable.
I looked on the net but didn't find a easy to follow guide. I did find some software that says it'll do it, but most were kind of expensive and I couldn't find any reviews or anything to help me sort out which ones are worth it and which ones aren't.
Anyone have any suggestions for tutorials or software?
I've been using GBPVR for ages now (from 2003 or 2004 till now) and I feel like I've been contributed into GBPVR development a lot also from user "hack" side (multiple net client usage scenarios; automated transcoding etc.), but today I'm stuck in mud and need your help as Vancouver Olympics is arriving and after my OSs' upgrade GBPVR won't work at all and I really can't find out why...
My successful setup already for about 4 years: now windows 2008 x64 r2 (previous w2k3 x86; 8GB RAM on ASUS M2NPV-VM; AMD X2 5200+) utilizing Hauppauge HVR-1300 (for national Estonian h.264 DVB-T) and X3M-TV TU1100L USB-stick (for Finnish MPEG2 DVB-T) (sorry, my old analogue PVR-150 retired about 6 months ago fighting against some lightening storm) + ASUS Pundit-R (P4 3.2GHz 1GB RAM; XPSP2 x86; from year 2003) + IBM T42 + relevantly new Lenovo x200 (x64 w7 enterprise).
Previously I was running w2k3std x86 on server side for years and everything was just fabulous. Just some weeks ago I upgraded server to w2k8r2 x64 (legal one, of course) and the problems started. First of all, Hauppauge drivers installed from web ok, but WinTV 2000 didn't start. After Googling for hours, found BDA for R2 x64 .msi package, which still didn't provide sufficent success, even VLC didn't tune to DVB-T. After reading tens of forums, found that some tens of .dll's are needed from w7 to be hacked into w2k8r2 - fine, did it and VLC tunes all right! ...and also shows TV... Installed Visual C++ x64 sp to server and enabled .NET feature, Desktop Experience and DirectX at server 2008 R2 x64 and GBPVR installed ok and Config runs ok... Channel mapping works, EPG update works... but GBPVR web service doesn't even show up on "netstat -an"... connecting to tcp port using http times out. Windows firewall is disabled. Am I still missing some features on w2k8r2? Do I need to install also .NET 2.0 (as I remember, GBPVR used it?) along with .NET 3.5? Despite GBPVR http service doesn't run, I was successful recording shows using my antique GBPVR setup on ASUS Pundit-machine (XP SP2). I was quite happy. But after DVBLink installation onto server (for second USB tuner, which is not included in GBPVR setup) and couple w2k8r2 mandatory updates, my client machine does not record any more shows. TV guide is ok, pressing "quick record" marks show as red, but immediately it goes into "recordings" as green and ready and when looking onto server share, no .TS file nor directory is created. My T42 and X200 behaves the same way. All shares and permissions are "777", so nothing could prevent this, but still I can't figure out why my clients are not any more able nor to record or show any shows.
If you have w2k8r2 x64 setup, please write here what features / add-ons are installed on top of OS and with what permissions and firewall rules are you sucessfully running GBPVR networked setup???
Just installed ICL on the main server and it works great (except I don't get any verbage under synopsis). Good job! Now I want to install it on a GB-PVR client PC and am wondering if ICL can act as a true client... i.e. it uses the server's settings and files so that I do not have to do a separate refresh (and get two copies of all the trailers and movie info, one on the server and one on the client).
Basically it is a a year old and already everyone out there is using folder.jpgs and background.jpgs etc... to create some killer cover art pages for your videos.
everyone is on the bandwagen and doing this from xbmc, media browser for windows 7 my movies, sagetv, mediaportal with moving pictures plugin... to name a few that I tried or looked at. (Gbpvr just works right so I won't migrate to the others..)
with that said I am happy to see that the video plugins author has released the source code and whurlston is trying to bring this project back to life.
On my experience the plugin works very good using the default blue skin only It crashes pvrx2 with a windows error but I can ignore that using the green button on my remote to regain focus and I can continue through the menus..
The serious problem we have is that their is no scraper for gbpvr users that I know of that will get the needed files to make the eye candy work on the directories.they are..

video.jpg - coverart
background.jpg - movie walllpaper for the dir
folder.jpg - cool pic for the top menus
video.xml - movie description
folder.xml - short movie description for top filmstrips menu's
JavaWiz's metadatagrabber can grab the video.jpg and video.xml
The above programs have scrapers for this but I failed to make them work with the file names that gbpvr creates plus my added titles usings zeds awesome guide enhancer for date and rating

I think that with javawizs metadatagrabber grabbing much info that someone can use that info lik mp3 taggers do to display and arrange files based off of year or actor or whatever (comedy)
sub probably has some sweet features already in the works for a future release so I hope the gbpvr programming community see's that together you all have already put the ground work up for what's needed and just have to get together to put all those pieces together to make one killer data skin with all the eye candy.
I have modified that idea to work with whurlston videos plugin and I ran into problems with metadata displaying in the list views. No biggie since I am using the filmstrip view but I would love to get it to disappear when using the other modes.
I will post the skin file I moded encase anyone wants to play with it.

What am I doing wrong?? I'm prepared to be embarrassed by a simple mistake!
Sorry if this has been covered before but I have spent a while looking in the threads and couldn't find any info on it. I am currently running v1.3.11 on windows xp sp2 with the nova-t 500 dual tuner.
My issue is that i have set a program to record on TV1 from 7:30 to 8:00 and then a program on TV3 from 8:00 to 8:30. Now my settings are to start recording 2 minutes before the show starts and 10minutes after. So I should get 10 minutes of TV1 after 8:00 before it stops and 2 minutes before 8:00 on TV3. But what happens is that the recording stops straight at 8 so that it can stop and then start recording TV3. I can record tv1 and tv3 at the same time if i select the two channels at the same time(as in shows that are on at the present time, so not scheduled). They will use tunner1 for TV1 and tunner2 for TV3. But for some reason this doesn't happen for shows that are selected to record in the future. Only tunner1 seems to being used which results in no overrun of the program on TV1 and no early recording of the show on TV3. Anyone had this issue before?
