  HTPC Media Center help
Posted by: mvallevand - 2021-03-30, 06:16 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

A users posted this to me via PM, but I don't support via PM so I thought I'd post it here with my replies below.

I hope you can help me better understand how to solve my HTPC problem.  I am currently running Windows Media Center on a Windows 7 Pro computer with a Ceton infinitv-4 card.  Up until today, it worked flawlessly.  The infinitv 4 accepts a cablecard from my cable provider and allows me to record four channels simultaneously.  Today, Windows Media Center started freezing when I try to view or change channels, and nothing I do has fixed the issue.  Windows Media Center has been unsupported for years, so I have known for some time that it would have to be replaced.  It appears to me that no one piece of software will replace WMC.  It also seems that none of the software options available support my infinitv-4 card.  If I am to be able to continue to record 4 TV channels at the same time, I believe I will have to do the following:

1. Remove the infinity-4 and replace it with a Hauppauge Colossus2 or similar card
2. Replace the CableCard with a Cable set-top box.
3. Install the NextPVR software to allow me to record 4 live TV programs.
4. Install some Media Center Frontend like Plex or Kodi.

If you know of an easier way to solve my problem, please share it.  Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Update existing channel numbers during scan?
Posted by: 2leftfeet - 2021-03-30, 05:56 PM - Forum: NextPVR Support - Replies (2)

I noticed that a new checkbox labeled " Update existing channel numbers during scan " in the general settings page - what exactly does this do if checked?

  Guide update frequency

Quote "(2021-02-27, 02:09 PM)mvallevand Wrote: Wrote:Pluto TV will be better after sub's next server update.  There will be a way of updating the guide more frequently and it has been working very well for me in testing.

Martin, you are baiting us with the testing of the next update, lol.   I know this is really for sub, but any idea when this next release of npvr might actually be released?" ENDQUOTE

Martin/Sub,

Is this feature included in most recent release?  I don't seem to be able to find it?

  Roku Hardware
Posted by: mvallevand - 2021-03-30, 04:42 PM - Forum: Roku - Replies (5)

There are many generations of Roku players that have support for various video and audio formats.  Some older players in particular don't support MPEG video support and many players old and new don't support AC3 audio decoding.

The good news is that most TV's with build in Roku do support AC3,  otherwise the options can be limited if your player doesn't support AC3 decoding.  First see if you have the option on your TV, receiver or soundbar, you might be able to use AC3 pass through.  If not, you will need to disable direct play for Live TV and transcode recordings.  Fortunately transcoding audio is fairly straightforward.  I will be creating an additional thread for transcoding.

A secondary issue is the the Roku cannot play all MPEG TS containers.  Some testers have reported errors on playback, typically reporting "Malformed URLs".  These will require remuxing of recordings and disabling Direct Play.

For 4K playback note Roku players do not scale 4K to 1080p.

It probably is a good idea for users to post experience with their hardware with the NextPVR channel.   Here are mine:

Roku Premier 3920x.  No AC3 decoding but AC3 passthrough works.  MPEG TS works with my tuners but MP4 is better.  No mute on the remote.

Roku Ultra 4800x.  AC3 decoding works MPEG TS works with my tuners but MP4 is better.  16:9 SD MPEG2 video is not rendered full screen.   It is a modern player though and can play new media formats like Dolby Vision, AV1, AC-4 in mkv and mp4 containers that many other player don't support.

Docker Install Showing Version Version: 5.1.1.210328
Posted by: pkscout - 2021-03-30, 04:25 PM - Forum: Docker amd64 - Replies (3)

The information I'm seeing in the announcements is that the new version is 5.1.1.210329, but the Docker image seems to be reporting 5.1.1.210328. That could just be a matter of the Docker image being built the day before (since the minor version number seems to be based on date), and I'm not sure if it matters, but I did want to say something.

EPG not working on OpenSUSE install.
Posted by: t2t4 - 2021-03-30, 04:10 PM - Forum: Linux - Replies (1)

I was able to install NextPVR successfully.

On Debian 10 the HDHomerun Tuner is able to fetch DVB/ATSC guide over the air via Freeview as well as being able to watch the channels. However after making a install on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed via the zip file  I am able to watch the channels but I can't see the EPG guide via the web ui.Whenever I try to update the EPG it doesn't work and says 0 channels updated.

  Roku Remote Control
Posted by: mvallevand - 2021-03-30, 04:07 PM - Forum: Roku - Replies (21)

Using the Roku remote control with NextPVR can be a bit challenging as there are not as many keys as you might find on a TV remote.  That seems to be the nature of all new players though and I tried to make things as usable as possible.  To use the remote please review the keys and the Remote Extensions in the following link https://github.com/emveepee/Testing/wiki...dReference  A long press means holding the key for a half a second.

These instructions require you to make this change in config.xml

<LeftRightBehaviour>Long Skip</LeftRightBehaviour>

In addition to the NextPVR keys there are a few other things to note.

- The Remote Home key will exit the channel but leave you in the same screen when you return, if you want to Exit completely use the Exit option on the main menu.

- A long  press on the * key will provide a channel specific Options Menu, use this to select a server if you have more than one, enter a remote IP or configure things if you run V4 and V5 together or access NextPVR remotely.   Also disable Direct Play if your Roku player doesn't support AC3 audio.

- Hitting * during video play will provide an option to show North American closed captioning. I tried to enable DVB subtitles but it is not clear it is possible.

In NextPVR hitting long press on OK will open a secondary dialog. There are currently two choices

- select numbers with left or right , this can be tricky RW and FW cause it number to move 10x but useful for percentage jumps in long lists and channel changing in the guide or live TV.  If you hit a number in a recording then you still need to use the left or right key or navigation. If you wish you can select the number withe the play key which is the same as number followed by the right key

With the up/down key you select colours on the Recording screen

Please use this thread to ask questions of provide suggestions on ways of improving remote navigation.
