  Amplifier for cable TV
Posted by: Scudo - 2007-01-13, 12:53 AM - Forum: Hardware - Replies (4)

Hey everyone, I'm currently wondering whether or not an amplifier will do me any good. See, two channels (HBO and the History Channel) seem to be coming in very poorly. The History Channel's video is very garbled and the only audio I get is static, while HBO's video is just very weak overall (compared to most other channels that look fine). This is just standard analog Cable TV, straight from the wall into my tuner. Standard TVs in the same building get these channels just fine.

I'm using an ATI Theater 550, and on these forums I've read that they require a strong signal. This is why I'm considering getting an amplifier to boost my signal a bit.

The only problem is that I'm living in a dorm on a university campus, and there's no telling how many times the cable is split to go to all the different rooms. My worry is that if I buy an amplifier, I'll be amplifying all of the noise in the signal as well and I'll be no better off.

I know it may be hard to comment without knowing the specifics of how many times the cable is split, how far it is from the source, etc., but do you think an amplifier would yield any improvement? Has anyone else had a similar situation, maybe in a dorm or an apartment?

  v0.99.5 - Some feedback
Posted by: Stevie77 - 2007-01-13, 12:46 AM - Forum: GB-PVR Support (legacy) - Replies (20)

The main purpose for my gbpvr-installation is to use it as tv-server in the cellar to feed the mvp in the livingroom. Version 0.99.5 is the best ever. Most things worked right out of the box.
But there are still some minor issues in my kind of installation. Most of them are mvp-related.
- (MVP) high bitrate recordings get out of sync when doing ff/rew or skip. Playing them from the beginning is no problem. In live-tv mode it's the same. I have to skip to the beginning and just let it play. This is maybe an muxer issue.
- (MVP) aspect ratio of displayed photos is wrong. They're stretched a little bit. An issue of this plugin since sub integrated it.
- (MVP) the osd is not displayed full screen. It does not use the whole available space as hauppauge, mvpmc or vomp (linux/vdr) do.
- (MVP) letterboxing video from 16:9 to 4:3 doesn't work. This is hauppauge relatet, but mvpmc and vomp do this right.
- (pc/recording service) somehow windows is "blocked" by the recording service when I want to restart/standby/hibernate the system. It looks like windows cannot "kill" the service. Stopping or killing it manually does let it do it's work. While looking after the new mdapi-interface I noticed that the build filter-graph whilst doing a record (or timeshift live-tv) stayes connected. I don't know if this is really the problem but I think so.
All other standard functions are working good and stable now here.

Vista HCL for GBPVR for inclusion in the Wiki?
Posted by: andyd - 2007-01-12, 11:01 PM - Forum: Hardware - No Replies

I guess it had to be done as some point, I am more then help to help start it and get it up and running and keep it going. But it really requires feedback from members as it will be the members contributing there feedback on where a driver is working or even available at this moment.

When I first looked at gbpvr it would have been nice to see a table with some sort of feedback regarding HW or a HCL

for Example if I had seen a table with

WinTV-PVR150 | OK WinXP | bad drivers in XP64 | etc etc
MCE Remote | OK WinXP | Just wont work in XP64 | etc etc

Then I would thought twice about buying this gear for my XP64 machine...

Thoughts and comments people??

Blank Screen using TV Wonder 550
Posted by: oakfellow - 2007-01-12, 10:04 PM - Forum: GB-PVR Support (legacy) - Replies (4)

I couldn't find this issue mentioned in the forums, but I'm hoping someone's run into and can help me out. I got my new card (ATI TV Wonder 500) installed and working with ATI's supplied PVR. I installed GB-PVR in hopes of using a better PVR, but I can't get it to work.
I defined the capture source as described in the wiki, and booted it up. Unfortunately, LiveTV doesn't seem to work. All I get when I click the button is a black screen (no error messages or anything). The Recording Status widgit (from the system tray) shows the card as active and tuned to the last channel I was viewing.
Using the Tuning Assistant, I was able to view video just fine.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-Ian

yet another user with hibernation problems.
Posted by: wannabepvr - 2007-01-12, 10:01 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (6)

Posting here because I doubt this has anything to do with GBPVR, but being such a helpful community perhaps someone can help. Wink

I have a hibernation problem as many do - but in searching the posts I can't see any reference to this one.

Issue: computer will hibernate (s4). But is immediately woken up.

However it will suspend (s1) and stay suspended until the recording service or mouse wake it. (remote won't)Does anyone know if there is a log generated that might tell me what called the wake up. Otherwise I just don't know where to start.

Any help unappreciated.

  Volume for music
Posted by: ydekmekji - 2007-01-12, 09:28 PM - Forum: GB-PVR Support (legacy) - Replies (3)

I've + and - mapped to my remote but don't seem to work to control volume but for video. I saw Sub mention that it only works on the main menu, it doesn't work there either.

Also, when playing music, visualization comes on nicely, but then the screensaver kicks in and trumps the visualization--anyway possible to turn off screensaver when there is music?

  Digital Channel Mapping
Posted by: kitcho - 2007-01-12, 09:20 PM - Forum: GB-PVR Support (legacy) - Replies (3)

Hi,

Ive just downloaded and installed GB PVR, and setup the program for use with my Nova T 500. As a newbie, typically i ran into an error.

When i click on 'Map digital channels to EPG channels' a dialog box comes and reads:

-------------------------

''GB-PVR was unable to start to DBA device you configured. Check the device is configured properly, and not already in use. (Reason: failed to locate configured BDA capture device)''

-------------------------
please help

many thanks

  DVD camcorder
Posted by: Jase - 2007-01-12, 09:17 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

I have a sony camcorder which uses 8cm dvd's for recording. I have got double sided dvd's as you only get 30 mins per side. What would be the best way for me to join/merge the two sides and convert them to mpeg for playback on the mvp. I have tried different methods using different software but nothing seems to work very well.

Is there any way i can join/merge the two sides and then burn them back to a standard dvd with just one main menu and one video file as this seems to be inpossible?

Cheers Jase

  Question Re Hd/digital Cable
Posted by: jerry430 - 2007-01-12, 08:52 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (20)

My current PVR consists of a Hauppauge PVR-150 connected to a 32" CRT via MediaMVP. I have Time Warner analog cable.
I've seen several postings regarding people using digital cable and an HDTV. I was of the understanding that the PVR150 would not work with digital cable. What is the sense of getting digital cable if you can't use the PVR? Also, would it be worthwhile to buy an HDTV using analog cable? It seems that the clarity of HD would be limited by a non-digital signal.
These may sound like stupid questions, but I can't see getting digital cable or HD if I have to do without my PVR or GBPVR.

  Getting Flash Video
Posted by: ydekmekji - 2007-01-12, 08:32 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

I'm sure many of you know the answer to this question--Sub was able to pull off/download you tube videos. It's been cool. There is a sight with some flash videos... I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to pull that off (without downloading software)...
