I have made it a bit simpler. I was trying to do too much with the GUI.

Now it just pops up and asks you for the folder you want to import, then generates a recordings.xml file in that folder.

For the moment i have put "BBC1" into the channel field of the xml, as i'm not really sure what it's used for.

Personally i don't really take much notice of what channel a program has come from when i watch it!

If anyone else is interested the format of the xml i am using, it's as follows :-

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
<recordings>
[INDENT]<recording>
[INDENT]<filename></filename>
<channel></channel>
<status></status>
<startTime></startTime>
<endTime></endTime>[/INDENT]
</recording>[/INDENT]</recordings>

Perhaps sub could enlighten me on the use of the channel part.

And also on how to import season recordings. As that would be nice to avoid missing anything that appears while on holiday.

I have tested it by creating a few empty mpg files in a test directory structure and it seems ok. I will be testing it out for real when all my recordings have copied over to my new server.

"channel" should contain the name of the channel you want the recording to be associated with. For example, if you put 'bbc1", then it'll link the recording to the bbc1 channel (e.g. show bbc1 as the channel name in the recordings screen. If "bbc1" doesnt exist, it'll create a channel with this name during the import, so you're best to use a channel that really exists.

This import feature only works for ready recordings. It cant be used to create pending recordings or season recordings.

I went through the tv guide on the new machine last night and added in most of my season records manually.

Anyway, i have now had a successful test using the import file that my little utility generates and it all went fine. I now have all my old recordings on the new machine.

I've changed the interface again, it has a GUI mode, which prompts for everything, and a command line mode, so it could be run as part of post processing to create a backup xml file of all recordings.

The only slight downside is that they're all listed as manual recordings with the filename as the description (see attachment).

Are there any other xml nodes i can use to get a nice description into the gbpvr database?

Oh, and how do i go about putting my utility up where other people can get at it?

If you make a recording from the TV guide, then after the recording 'export' it, you'll see the format of the XML file including the description.

Thanks for that sub.

I have now added title and subtitle support. Without going off to bleb or some other tv listing service i can't really pull in detailed descriptions, so i've left that blank.

I checked it out on my test rig last night and it seems fine.

If there is any interest in this utility then i would like to make it available to others. I can set it up on some of my own web space or would it be better in the wiki?

It would probably be better in the wiki. PM blader_se to get a password and username. He usually gives you one within the day. You might also post an announcement in the Community Announcment part of the forum so people can see that you've released this.

I am rather new at this but has anyone tried looking at the metadata.xml that is stored with each recording? It contains the same information you would get from the recordings export I think. This only applies if you are using ntfs for the file system for recordings. Try the following

notepad "<path to recording>Filename Of Recording:metadata.xml"

I think I remembered this correctly. Looks like you could make a batch file to build the recordings.xml from these.

Not something I found but something Sub posted in another question.

I just tried it on a new recording.

I am running on NTFS and it couldn't find the file.

Maybe i am missing something.
