This might be a possibility.

Yes that's what I read, to stop XP Explorer from checking stuff in the AVIs.

But I think the better fix is to fixAVI

I've tried a couple of the free/trial wares and they worked. But it was really only one offending file I got off the net

The next day after I posted here that I had this problem a few weeks ago and had gotten rid of it, the problem resurfaced.

This time i tried to approach it somewhat logically. I found that my cpu on my desktop would peg 100% and stay there whenever I accessed a folder on my laptop which contains about 10 or 12 avi movies. I often use the laptop to play movies for my daughter when we are travelling.

As soon as I accessed the offending folder the cpu usage on my desktop would hit 100%, however, I could open the same folder on my laptop and cpu usage stayed low.

In this folder was a shortcut to a video that was in a subfolder. I think I created this in a hurry one day so that she could play the movie, rather than wait to transfer the file to where she could access it.

I stopped and restarted explorer on my desktop, deleted the shortcut on my laptop and navigated to the folder again and this time no problem. Hopefully that was it and I don't need to reinstall windows right now.

this is an old xp problem caused by explorer trying to read a video file that has a corrupt header. To fix the root-cause, you should obviously work out why you have corrupt video files, but as a work around, here is how you can stop explorer from attempting to read the video files and hanging.

4) To remove media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
5) To readd media preview, type and hit enter
regsvr32 shmedia.dll

I know this is a old thread. I just wanted to let everyone know that this thread helped me fix my problem with explorer.exe.

My problem started after I installed the Video Archiver Plug-in. One of the files I archived somehow got corrupted in the move. Whenever I opened the archive folder, explorer.exe would lockup and go to 100%.

After regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll ...no more problems.

Thanks,
Mr. Camaro

Just remember that you haven't solved the problem, you've only turned off an indicator...

For some that's OK... Myself I needed to find the reason why it was bad.

You should look into why the file is mildy corrupted in the first place.

I ended up using 'fixed avi' from the k-lite mega codec pack (installed as custom install)

I used to ask 'why?' Now I just reinstall...

Yes I found out which file it was after I got explorer.exe to stop locking up. One the the files that video archiver started to copy only got partially copied. I just deleted the partially copied one and recopied the original.
