I can't get java applets to run - for example, the Java Test on the java website fails immediately. It's a 64 bit Win7 Sp1 machine with all service applied and I've tried both the 32 and 64 bit versions of IE9. It seems to install OK and the Control Panel applet works fine.

I've switched on and off: Windows Firewall, AntiVirus, ActiveX filtering, Compatibilty Mode, Uncle Tom Cobley and All.

I've screwed something up... Anyone got any ideas?

Can you enable the java console and see if it says anything?

Have you tried with another browser?

I never use IE9, but I've checked it with the 1.7.0_03 java I have installed (on Win7, x64 too) and it seems fine.

I can't even get the java icon to display in the system tray...

I don't want to install another browser (it's a friends machine) - and I'm beginning to suspect a wider problem - for instance the OK button on Tools/About in IE9 does nothing...

I suspect the recovery disks will be comimg out shortly...

Un-install everything Java-related and start again. I personally wouldn't resort to recovery disks for the sake of Java.

Just my two pennoth but then again I'm sitting in a pub watching the sunset. Big Grin

I've unistalled and reinstalled java several times but I've never actually checked the registry after an uninstall - i might try that first.

I have to get java working - it's needed for the primary purpose of the machine which is to login to a remote system...

Have a beer on me...

In IE9 did you go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Java and enable it?

I already tried that Martin - but the Java section which should be in the list on the Advanced tab is missing?

In the IE9 menu in Tools (gear at right) Manage Addons is it enabled?

Is it not an option that has to be turned on using the control panel thingymabob? Can't remember if its default is to be shown or hidden though.
