Hi,

I installed GBPVR and I'm very happy with it. But here comes the question, I have created a seperate user account under XP with limited possibilities, I want it to boot into GBPVR, but I'm unable to start GBPVR from any account but an admin account. Does anyone have a clue how to make it possible to start the program from an ordinary account?

Thanks!

I've got the same question. Anyone know which specific rights are needed to allow gbpvr to work with a restricted account?

bump.

On the client (the kids's PC), I usually install into somewhere other than c:\program files\ since non-admin/limited user accounts don't have unrestricted access to the files/subfolders. (eg c:\Games) . But that didn't work. Trying to stream PVRX2 live TV or recordings just comes up with a blank screem and ctrl-alt-del required to exit PVRX2. Last entry in the logs says something like "about to play file" for a recording playback

Running on an adminsitrator account works fine.

You might want to give power user a shot.

I have been running GB-PVR fine in a limited user account for several years. Here are a few tricks, though there may be something I have forgotten:
(1) Temporarily give Admin rights to the User account. Then install GB-PVR normally so that it installs into the Program Files folder in the default location.
(2) Right-click on the "devnz" folder thus created in Program Files, select the Properties/Security tab, and then highlight the name of the User account. Then select the checkbox for "modify" and then click on Apply. I do this for both the named User account, and also for the "Users" account.
(3) Click on the Start button, select Run, and type in "regedt32". Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Devnz folder, right click on that folder and select Permissions. Then highlight "Everyone" and select "Full Control" and click on Apply. Then close out the registry editor.
(4) The icons that are created in the GB-PVR startup folder all point to the wrong location, apparently due to the development software that Sub uses. I just delete them and create new ones on the desktop pointing to the program folder. For example, create a shortcut for "C:\Program Files\devnz\gbpvr\GBPVR.exe" in order to start up GB-PVR.

That is basically it, but there is still one more trick to be aware of. You will see a couple of annoying windows open up whenever you reboot your PC. To eliminate these, go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services and right-click on "GB-PVR Recording Service". Then select Properties/Log On, and unselect "Allow service to interact with desktop".

Finally, you can remove Admin rights from the User account, and everything should work.

JimF,

Thanks for the detailed description.

I presume you are not running XP Home since Home doesn't allow setting folder security as you describe (there's no security tab). Hence my install to a different folder to c:\program files.

I'm going to have to keep trying though - there's something else going on with my limited account client machine that's causing problems, since I would have thought the changes you describe to the folder permissions and registry would have worked as well - unless there is some hard coding in PVRX2 to a folder that XP Home doesn't normally give a limited account write access too.

I am running XP Pro. But that raises another point. In Tools/Folder Options/View, you have to uncheck "Use simple file sharing" in order to see the Security tab. I don't think that works in XP Home, but you could check.
