I decided that I'm looking for a Dual Tuner for my new PC setup. I was looking at the Hauppauge WinTV 500, but was wondering if anyone thought this was a solid card to go with or if they would reccomend something else instead. I also saw NVidia DualTV. I do not have Windows Media Center edition and was looking to just get a PVR program such as GB-PVR or SageTV, and wondered if these would work with that and which one you would reccomend.

I'm looking to order it within the next day or 2, so any input at all would be appreciated.

Also I'm not sure or not if that comes with a remote. According to what I have read it does not look like it does. If it doesn't, could someone by chance reccomend one to get since I will be using this as a PVR that would work well? I was looking for something that would work with GBPVR, which I am definitely interested in trying first, and if it does not work well, then maybe SageTV

Thank you very much,

~J

The PVR-500 is a very fine card. I use it with great satisfaction.
It does indeed not come with a remote. There are however versions available with a windows MCE remote bundled. However again here are differences. Look out for the MCE remote with the 4 colored buttons. There is more info on the forum and the wiki available about the remote options.

but if I don't have MCE, and will just have either SageTV, Beyond TV or GBPVR, will I still be able to use an MCE remote or will I need another one?

As far as I know there are a ton of people using the PVRXXX series cards (150-500) that are using an MCE remote. I use an ATI remote wonder with a PVR150MCE and I don't use Windows Media Center, I am on XP-Pro SP2.
Hope that helps!
Jake

PS Get the PVR500, a remote and GB-PVR... you will be VERY happy with how everything works!

You don't need MCE to use the MCE cards...PVR150MCE, 500MCE, etc. They work just fine with XP (MCE is just XP with some add-ons).

For a remote, I use the Microsoft MCE 2005 remote (with XP). It seems to work just fine and can be had for about $40 (I got mine from Newegg).

Has anyone tried that Nvidia dual tuner? I'm considering swapping out my PVR150 for it for a couple of reasons. The dual tuners of course, but also because Nvidia seems to be a bit better in providing drivers for x64 systems (I never was able to get the Hauppauge remote to work). Also, Nvidia makes both my video card and the chipset for my motherboard, so I figured it might integrate a little better. I don't know if I'll actually switch though. Untill I have enough money to get a flat pannel monitor big enough to replace my TV I only use the recorder on the PC as a back up.

I'm fairly sure the nvidia dual tuner card does not work with GB-PVR.

Sigh... Sub, I understand and respect your position on this Nvidia card. I own one and have been using it with BeyondTV. I used to use GBPVR, but ended up purchasing one license of BTV since it was handling my HDTV needs better at the time. Now, I am stuck as I can't back up and try newer versions of GBPVR without the hassle of selling the Nvidia card and getting a Hauppauge for SDTV.

I'll keep checking back to see if it happens some day. I'm always hopeful! Smile
