Came across http://cuttermaran.movie2digital.de/ which looks like it might be promising for chopping up large MPEG files generated by GBPVR (without recalculation).

Since my PVR is still in working prototype mode (Pentium III 800) I don't have really great resources for mashing large MPEG files (not without having several hours spare!Wink - Anyone else want to try it and post some feedback?

cuttermaran is a good program and its free. Once thing to note, you need to demux your mpeg and load it in as elementary streams, though it will mux things back together for you (as it comes with mplex as well).

A new version was recently released so maybe in time you will be able to directly load in a mpeg.

Colin,
What program do you use to demux? I used pavstrumento. But that cut the file in many smaller peaces and also caused many sync issues to occur...

BTW can cuttermaran cut automatically on frames detected by comskip?

It's not free, but take a look at VideoReDo. You can try it free for 30 days. Great software and great support.

I use this one also and it has worked for me with no problems.

Is that like the WinTV Editor, it looks very similar to VidoeReDo.

Generally i run mpg's through rejig to get the elementary streams, though take a browse through the software page at doom9.org for other interesting programs.

Some people have had mixed success with nanoPEG at producing correct/compliant streams, though i have not used any of its successors. More often i would re-encode captures, record them at high quality, then run them through something like avisynth/quenc.

In my setup, my GB-PVR box is in the living room. It's on the house LAN. I cut commercials and master and burn DVDs on my own machine in the home office.

The problem with the nanompeg software that comes with the card is that it requires the card to be installed in order to work. Otherwise, you have to buy the full version.

So, since I have to pay for software anyway...

I first tried Womble Mpeg-VCR. It's a nice program with some nice features.

Someone here on the board recommended VideoRedo and I rather like the user interface. Basically, I use it for commercial deletion. I can rip through a 1-hour broadcast and cleanly block-off the commercial breaks in a couple of minutes.

The nice thing about both MpegVCR and VideoRedo is that you can mark the in and out points on ANY frame and the program will take care of any re-encoding that's necessary.

Demux with projectX (it's free and it preserves the video/audio synch, presumably by inserting padding when frames are dropped) and then edit/remux with cutteraman. Mpeg2vcr is great but you have to remux before you can edit so it requires an extra step. If you never get dropped frames (and so don't need to demux/pad frames/remux) then mpeg2vcr is probably the more convenient option but it costs.
