i use a universal harmony remote with a homemade IR reciever running through the serial header. Its amazing because it controls the TV, mediapc, receiver, etc. Work the money IMHO.
I made the harmony think it was an MCE remote. Detailed tutorial here: http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=21936

I just set mine up to use the Microsoft IR receiver and added a OFA 4220. I used 0616 for the DVR code (Panasonic) and mapped all the command with HIP. This works great and I can control my TV, DVD player, and GBPVR box with it. I couldn't use the MCE remote because I have an XBOX360 that uses the same remote and causes problems.

I bought a USB-UIRT receiver instead of buying a remote. I liked this option better because I already had a pretty powerful universal remote for my tv, ht, set-top box, etc. So I only have to use one remote for everything (including my GBPVR). Just to add my two cents in, I found Girder to be incredibly confusing and HIP to be extremely straight forward.

Ok I have a really nice universal remote already. I can program and everything on it so I can use that if I just get the usb-urit? Would any universal remote work then?

Yeah. Its really easy. Hip, Girder, or GBPVR (usbuirt setting) will read your remote easily. I think that the only thing I really had to do was download the driver for the USBuirt from the website so Hip could use it.

Just in case some new person comes along and reads this to know I bought the microsoft remote from up above and then in the config settings of gbpvr goto the dvd/remote tab and in the remote drop down select microsoft mce remote and it works completely. I love it thanks guys. Sub I will definantly donate as soon as I start my new job out of work for little over a week and start next wednesday so shortly after will donate for sure love the program.
THanks everyone for helping me get this going the way I wanted. []

FYI
I am setting up a second PVR & using a home-made receiver & PCRemoteControl. I bought a urc-4220 one for all remote at Big Lots for $6. I found if I program it for a TV/DVD/VCR combo device I can gain access to all but one of the buttons. The "FAV" button doesn't work. |
